The Climate and Sustainability Programme at ODI is working to build a more equitable world, underpinned by climate-compatible development and sustainable stewardship of natural resources. We use robust data to influence governance, policy and investment in ways that reduce poverty, inequality and environmental degradation. We support governments, communities and industries to secure just and sustainable transitions, drawing on our renowned expertise in agriculture, land, water, energy and cities, and the connections between them.
Recent programme highlights include:
- Launching the Energy Policy Tracker to monitor whether G20 countries are spending their fiscal stimulus in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The Tracker finds that 46% of all public money spent on energy has been committed to carbon-intensive sectors.
- Completing the first global survey of land and property rights, which measures perceptions of tenure security. Prindex finds that almost 1 billion people around the world live in fear of eviction.
- Publishing the Climate Transparency Report, the world’s most comprehensive annual review of G20 countries’ climate action and their transition to a net-zero emissions economy.
- Co-chairing the independent Global Stocktake (iGST) on finance, a consortium of civil society organisations that support the assessment of collective progress towards the financial goals of the Paris Agreement.
About you
We are seeking to appoint a Research Officer or a Senior Research Officer to join ODI’s Climate and Sustainability Programme. This new role will focus on sustainable finance, including international provision of climate finance; steering private finance for low-carbon, climate-resilient investments; and evaluating the consistency of all streams of finance with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Under the supervision of Research Fellows, the post holder will contribute to designing and delivering innovative, high-quality and policy-relevant research, policy advice and public-affairs initiatives. They will undertake literature reviews and desk-based analysis of policies and plans relating to sustainable finance; engage with policymakers, civil society organisations and financial institutions to build momentum towards greener fiscal and financial systems; and draft working papers, blogs and other outputs that present new evidence and recommendations in a clear and compelling way.
About you
Research Officer
- A degree and post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline.
- A good and demonstrable knowledge of finance and economics in relation to climate change;
- 1-2 years of relevant experience in government departments, financial institutions or research organisations.
- Strong interpersonal skills and cultural awareness with the ability to negotiate successfully.
- Excellent writing skills
- Good qualitative research skills, particularly the ability to conduct surveys and code interview transcripts
- Comfortable working with quantitative data, including collating, interpreting and managing data, as well as understanding the limitations of data
- Good presentation and networking skills.
- Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, Power Point).
- Ability to work in a team.
- Ability to work on own initiative.
Senior Research Officer
- A degree and post-graduate degree in relevant discipline.
- A good and demonstrable working knowledge of finance and economics in relation to climate change;
- 3-5 years of relevant experience in government departments, financial institutions or research organisations.
- Experience working in different countries and/or with international partners.
- Track record of producing high-quality research outputs tailored to different audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills and cultural awareness with the ability to negotiate successfully.
- Excellent writing skills
- Excellent qualitative skills, including an ability to design and conduct surveys and to code and analyse interview transcripts
- Comfortable working with quantitative data, including collating, interpreting and managing data, as well as understanding the limitations of data
- Strong presentation, public speaking and networking skills.
- Fluency in a language other than English (desirable).
- Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
- Ability to work in a team.
- Ability to work on own initiative and under minimal supervision, to accept responsibility and to respond with confidence to complex and evolving problems.
