ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to:

(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Background

The Regional Economic and Social Analysis (RESA) Unit of the ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) oversees and promotes multi-country, multi-disciplinary and inter-sectoral policy analysis related to key issues and themes of relevance to decent work and inclusive growth. The unit is involved in research, data collection and labour market analysis in keeping with ILO global, regional and national priorities set out in the Centenary Declaration on the Future of Work, and more recently, in the Global Call to Action for a Human-Centred Recovery that is inclusive, sustainable and resilient.

Specific areas of work include: production of briefs, reports and blogs on regional labour and social issues with a view to advocating action towards the ILO’s vision of decent work and inclusive growth for all; strengthen the conceptual relationship with multilateral policy frameworks, including SDGs; develop and implement joint research activities and policy dialogues with regional organizations and academic partners; provide technical assistance to countries in the region to collect, process, analyze and make available gender and age disaggregated statistical data to measure decent work, including through SDG indicators; contribute to the regions knowledge management initiatives in order to stimulate knowledge sharing amongst countries and sub-regions; and provide technical advisory services and technical backstopping on youth employment issues to constituents and projects in the region.

ILO Project Office in Kuala Lumpur is cooperating with the Malaysian government, workers and employers under the framework of the Malaysia Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) 2021-25.

Presently, ILO development cooperation in Malaysia covers the following areas: labour law reform; labour law compliance; industrial relations and social dialogue; forced and child labour; supply chains; social protection; migrant workers and SME development.

Learning areas

The intern will support the RESA Unit and the ILO Project Office in Malaysia. Depending on the period engaged, s/he will carry out research in targeted areas within the scope of macroeconomics, labour market and social issues and policies and contribute to the unit’s production of internal briefs, external reports and publications.

As an ILO intern in RESA, your work would cover a range of areas such as:

- Compile national and regional economic and labour market statistics from official national and international sources;
- Undertake background research on various economic and decent work-related topics, for example inequality, productivity and wages, migration, informality, and employment and social trends;
- Draft studies or sections of studies as contribution to the production of ILO reports and publications, including on issues relating to future of work and the human-centred recovery;
- Contribute to the preparation and planning of ILO meetings and workshops involving tripartite constituents;
- Support other related work of RESA as needed.

The intern would also provide assistance in the communication requirements of the ILO Project Office in Kuala Lumpur, to prepare and disseminate relevant information about ILO work at the global-, regional- and country-level. Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to relevant administrative tasks.

Required profile

Education

The candidate should hold a degree or be finishing a degree in economics, statistics, social sciences and/or a related field.

• The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.

Experience

Some experience in the compilation of economic and labour market statistics and research and quantitative analysis of labour markets and/or related area(s) would be an advantage. Familiarity with MS Office (Excel, Powerpoint) and statistical software such as Stata or SPSS.

Languages

Excellent written and spoken English.

Selection process:

Stipend:

As an intern in the field, you will receive a monthly stipend from the ILO based on the cost of living in the area of the duty station, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive the appropriate stipend per month. Your travel to the duty station will be at your own expense.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
