Your responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to join our team, specializing in developing and optimizing software solutions for the Data Acquisition System (DAQ) system's backend and core infrastructure of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The ideal candidate will have a strong background in C++ programming, with significant experience in software development, system architecture, multi-threaded programming, and distributed computing. Familiarity with SiMD (Single instruction, Multiple data) techniques is considered a plus. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and optimizing software components crucial for data acquisition, processing, and management in the context of the DUNE experiment's DAQ system.

Key Responsibilities:

Collaborate closely with physicists, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and translate them into robust and scalable software solutions tailored to the unique needs of the DUNE experiment.Develop and maintain software components for data acquisition, including data buffering, event building, and data transfer protocols, ensuring efficient and reliable operation of the DAQ system.Contribute to the design and implementation of core software architecture and frameworks for the DUNE experiment, including software modules for configuration management, monitoring, and control.Utilize multi-threaded programming techniques and distributed computing principles to design scalable and efficient software solutions for parallel data processing and distributed data analysis.Drive the testing, debugging, optimization and performance tuning of software components to meet the stringent requirements of the DUNE experiment, including real-time data processing and high data throughput.Document software designs, implementation details, and user instructions, fostering clear communication and knowledge sharing within the team and the broader DUNE collaboration.Aid and contribute to the DAQ operations of the DUNE prototype detectors and experiments at CERN.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

Proven experience in C++ programming, with a strong understanding of software development principles and best practices.Proven experience with software development in a Linux environment is required.Significant experience in software architecture, multi-threaded programming, and distributed computing.Familiarity with SiMD techniques and optimization strategies is considered a plus.Excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for tackling complex technical challenges in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively convey technical concepts and solutions to diverse audiences.

Eligibility criteria:

You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.You have a professional background in Software Engineering and IT (or a related field) and have either: a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
