Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you an Applied Physicist or Electronics Engineer with good knowledge of radiation effects on electronics? Would you like to be at the forefront of radiation effects on components for accelerators or space applications? Then join the Sources, Targets and Interactions Group and contribute to the success of one of the most important physics centres in the world. CERN, Take Part!

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The Sources, Targets and Interactions (STI) Group has the mandate to study the interactions of beam with matter, applying its know-how to particle generation and particle interception. The group is also responsible for developing and maintaining the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and for providing formal training and support to its users in the accelerator community and to the experiments worldwide. The group is a member of the n_TOF and UA9 collaborations.

The Beam Machine Interactions (BMI) Section is in charge of the FLUKA code development, maintenance and support. The section performs beam-machine interaction studies for all CERN accelerators, and FLUKA calculations for different applications, including conceptual design of beam intercepting devices, new target areas, medical applications, radiation to electronics effects, etc.

Functions

As a Radiation Environment and Effects Engineer/Physicist in the STI group and “Radiation to Electronics” activity within CERN, you will:

Lead a number of currently ongoing and future accelerator and space-related radiation effects activities and contracts;Conceive, organize and - when applicable - execute radiation test campaigns aimed at characterizing Single Event Effects in emerging microelectronic technologies for space and accelerator applications;Take the technical responsibility for a variety of collaborations related to radiation effects, as well as of Work Packages within CERN coordinated EU projects;Conceive, organize and - when applicable - execute radiation test campaigns aimed at characterizing and evaluating irradiation facilities of possible interest for space and accelerator applications;Provide support to the technical coordination and execution of the currently ongoing CERN EU projects on radiation effects;Define best practices and guidelines for Radiation Hardness Assurance in accelerators and space applications;Partcipate to the preparation and delivery of radiation effects training material (e.g. for CERN internal training, external university and workshop seminars, etc.);Be involved in assessing and – when applicable – requesting funding opportunities from the EU and other potential collaborators/sponsors.
