1. General Background

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect and assist refugees and other persons of concern.

The Private Sector Partnerships Service (PSP) sits within UNHCR's Division of External Relations (DER) and is responsible for mobilizing resources from the private sector for refugees. Based at UN City in Copenhagen, PSP supports UNHCR’s global collaboration with the private sector and individuals through its network of fundraisers and national associations in almost 30 operations in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East and Gulf region. UNHCR has developed a $1 billion Private Sector Fundraising Strategy which focuses on Supporter Engagement and Private Sector Partnerships and works closely with priority markets and regions.

This role will sit within the Private Philanthropy Unit (PPU) as part of UNHCR’s centre for excellence based at UN City. PPU is part of the wider Private Partnerships and Philanthropy (PPH) team which encompasses three income streams, corporates, foundations and private philanthropy. Over the last few years, the PPU has focused on supporting countries and regions, now with increased resource and focus on decentralization, PPU leads on building new strategies for continued and significant income growth in the areas of private high and ultra high net worth gifs (from US$250,000 to many USD millions) including nurturing women philanthropists and special interest groups.

2. Purpose and Scope of Assignment

Key Responsibilities:

• Work with frontline ultra and high networth (U/HNW) fundraisers to develop strategies and build robust action plans to increase the number of major gifts (those over $250,000) given by private individuals
• Work with the Head of PPU to develop the number of loyal, global donors (those U/HNWIs living in more than one country). In collaboration with fundraisers in the markets/regions and via direct cultivation activities
• With other PPU colleagues create, support and promote appropriate cultivation events and actitivities for global donors for recognition
• Support PPU colleagues with research needs and mapping of connections and networks to identify U/HNW prospects (incl. potential global donors) around the world
• Support markets and regional teams to develop U/HNW care plans and secure resources for these activities
• Support markets/regional teams on a range of key initiatives and projects that are related to:
o Overall monitoring and evaluation of the UNHCR’s global U/HNW donor performance
o Providing data and insight to support major gift programs
o Facilitate knowledge transfer and the flow of ideas and innovation across UNHCR markets and regions, including presenting at internal skillshares, retreats and one-off webinars
o Drive opportunities for U/HNW donor journeys and facilitate the sharing of content and creative assets for U/HNWIs (including online donors).
o Share best practice guidance and key learnings on specific areas of U/HNW learning, via the PPU Sharepoint pages
o Coordination, planning and delivery of learning experiences and events that seek to build the capabilites and knowledge of fundraisers around U/HNWIs, including facilitating exchanges with other practitioners across the I/NGO sector
o Nuturing relationships with networkers and philanthropic influencers and wealth advisors.
• Perform other duties as required.

3. Qualifications and Experience

• Experience of working with major donors (ultra and HNWIs) asking and securing six and seven figure gifts
• Experience in creating fundraising strategies to grow income from major donor groups such women philanthropists, next generation donors, crypto donors and U/HNW giving groups
• Working within an international organization with multi-cultural colleagues, based in locations around the world
• Experience to show the building of strong, trustworthy relationships with individuals, families and, or groups of friends

a. Education

• An appropriate university degree.
• Qualifications in fundraising, marketing, communications, public relations or similar.

b. Work Experience

Essential:

• A minimum of five years experience working directly with private donors giving min. of $100,000 including those with the potential to give major gifts over $1million
• Experience in project management, with a proven track record of successfully implementing plans requiring expert knowledge
• Analytical skills with ability to establish and implement strategies and plans according to priorities, to manage and mitigate risks, and to balance different and sometimes competing needs and interests
• Excellent person skills, to work effectively with many HQ , regional and country based colleagues
• Strong experience and understanding of working succesfully with senior level stakeholders (internal and external)
• Experience of fundraising in an I/NGO environment
• Experience in managing and coordinating multiple stakeholders, with an ability to multi-task, manage time, keep with tight deadlines and to thrive in a high-pressure environment

Desirable:

• Experience of working on specific income generating areas such as; family foundations women, philanthropists and wealth advisors and those working with DAFs
• Experience of working with donors who see themselves as ‘living in’ more than one country and or region
• Experience in other areas of fundraising such as legacies, working with wealth advisors and, or faith based funders

Desired:

• Knowledge of Salesforce
• Knowledge of another UN language is an asset

5. Location and Conditions

The successful candidate will be based in the UN City in Copenhagen, Denmark. There is also the possibility for the incumbent to be home-based.

This position is initially up to the end of the year with possibility of extension subject to budget availability and overall performance of the incumbent. It is a full-time role starting from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).
