Job Description

Your responsibilities

The Engineering Department (EN) pushes forward the limits of technology to provide innovative research tools to the physics and engineering worldwide community. The position is opened in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group, which owns, maintains and develops the 40 years old know-how on the mechanical design, manufacturing and assembly of accelerator and detector devices.

As a Production Quality Assurance and Control Engineer in the Forming & Welding Section (MME-FW), you will participate in the fabrication follow-up and quality assurance for production of mechanical components with state-of-the-art technologies, including several assembly and welding techniques. The activities will be focusing on the construction of mechanical systems for radiofrequency crab cavities and related auxiliaries for the HL-LHC project, being performed at CERN and throughout an international collaboration of Institutes.

Are you passionate by fabrication of mechanical components working under severe environment? Do you have knowledge and experience in quality assurance/quality control matters related to fabrication of mechanical and machine-welded components? Then this is an opportunity for you: you will be part of a multidisciplinary team creating a large variety of equipment and components used at CERN, in the framework of a wide range of research and development projects. CERN, take part!

As a Production Engineer, you will:

Participate in the drafting of manufacturing, assembly and control procedures as well as the development of quality control plans (MIP), in accordance with the technical specifications.Ensure the administrative management of the technical documentation for production, control and quality assurance for the assembly part of the sub-components of the crab cavity cryomodules. When necessary, develop welding documentation for the various cryomodule sub-components (including DMOS, QMOS and QS). Coordinate the activities carried out by notified bodies.Provide \"design-for-manufacturing\" expertise for the manufacture of machine-welded assemblies subject to European and international construction requirements and standards (pressure vessels, vacuum chambers, cryogenics).Organize specific controls with the associated services at CERN (non-destructive testing, metallurgy, metrology).Produce non-conformity reports (NCR) as required, monitor the execution of preventive and corrective actions until the complete closure of non-conformities.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

Knowledge and application of welding techniques & related quality documentation.Knowledge and application of fabrication methods and work preparation, in particular assembly of mechanical structures and equipment as well as their manufacturing.Quality management: knowledge and application of quality control procedures and standards applicable to mechanical production including welding procedures, NDT, metrology and mechanical measurements.Initial experience in mechanical components assembly, good understanding of fabrication techniques and their application to the design process. An international certification in welding (IWE - International Welding Engineer) would be a strong asset.Knowledge of mechanical fabrication in the following domains would be a strong asset: pressure vessels, vacuum chambers, cryogenics.Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either: a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
