Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you a skilled Electronics Engineer with experience in FPGA and hardware design? Do you want to contribute to the new control hardware platform for the accelerator complex in the High Luminosity LHC era? Join CERN’s Controls Electronics and Mechatronics group, to work on the Distributed I/O Tier (DI/OT) hardware platform.

DI/OT (https://ohwr.org/project/diot/wikis) is a modular hardware platform featuring a Xilinx Zynq Ultrascale+ System-on-Chip and a radiation-tolerant implementation of a RISC-V processor in a Microchip Igloo2 FPGA.

You will join:

The BE Department, responsible for the beam generation, acceleration, diagnostics, controls and performance optimisation for the LHC and its injector accelerators.

The CEM Group, responsible for development and maintenance of controls hardware and low-level software, electronics design, production and radiation tolerance, mechatronics and robotics, test and measurement systems.

The EDL Section, responsible for the development and support of a collection of general-purpose electronic modules for controls and data acquisition.

Functions

As Electronics Engineer in the DI/OT project you will:

Take part in the design evolution of the hardware of various DI/OT components like the System Boards, Peripheral Board FMC Carrier, Crate and Fan Tray.Develop FPGA designs including DMA, high-speed transceivers and SoC processing system.Develop radiation-tolerant FPGA designs for the Igloo2 family using mitigation techniques like TMR and Error Correction Codes.Support users in the adoption of the DI/OT platform and development of application-specific hardware and FPGA modules.Develop low-level C code and Python for testing hardware and FPGA modules.Document and present your work as appropriate.Supervise a small team of Graduates.
