UNHCR is a global organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. UNHCR is present in 134 countries with offices in 546 locations.

In 2007, the UN Climate Neutral Strategy was developed, and organizations committed to move their respective organizations to climate neutrality. Since then, UNHCR has continuously improved its efforts in promoting the careful use of energy resources by refugees, host communities, partner organizations and as a priority by UNHCR itself. In 2019, UNHCR developed its Global Strategy for Sustainable Energy 2019-2024 which aims to enable persons of concern to UNHCR to meet their energy needs in a safe and sustainable manner.

It also launched the Clean Energy Challenge and is currently working on a first comprehensive Strategic Framework on Climate Action.

In 2020, UNHCR developed a Strategic Framework for Climate Action, and as part of this a new Greening and Sustainability Team to address the organization’s environmental footprint. This initiative is also part of a broader UN-System wide call to action on environmental sustainability refereed to Greening the Blue.

The UNHCR Greening and Sustainability Team focuses on the following areas:
• Green Fund: An innovative financing model to migrate UNHCR offices from fossil-based fuels to renewable energy
• Renewable Energy: Energy assessments to support feasibility for solarization of UNHCR offices.
• Green Data: Automated and dynamic real-time data collection, monitoring and visualization platforms.
• Green Practice: Influencing behavioral change through environmental good practice policies, guidelines, and capacity building.

The position

During the internship the incumbent will acquire the following:
• Knowledge of UNHCR’s core mandate, organizational structure and operational strategy.
• Experience in developing tools to engage personnel on environmental good practice.
• Exposure to applying expertise to develop practical solutions.
• Exposure to addressing environmental good practice across different regional contexts.

Duties and responsibilities

Green Practice Information Technology (IT) Intern

1. Assist the Green Practice Team with:
• Research on adapting or creating a simple online or IT-based tool for personnel to use as a green meetings guide. A green meetings guide is a guide on making choices that result in eco-friendly meetings. These choices result in different greenhouse gas emission impacts, and the online or IT-based tool would have corresponding in-built calculations.
• Developing a suitable green meetings guide tool or application.

2. Assist with organising webinar sessions to popularize the green meetings guide or other environmental good practice information as needed.
3. Assist with additional project, IT and administration tasks as needed.

Minimum qualifications required:
• Bachelor university degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Enrolled in a Master’s degree program in a field closely related to Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Web Development, or App Development.
• Advanced skills in programming languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
• Ability to identify and use free software products where possible.
• Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of software products.

Desirable qualifications and skills:
• Excellent English oral and writing skills.
• Familiarity with eco-friendly practices and awareness of environmental sustainability.
• Working knowledge of a second UN official language is an asset.

Eligibility

To be considered for an internship, candidates must:

- be a recent graduate* or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO
- have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to, or of interest to, the work of the organization; and
- not have immediate relatives (father, mother, brother, or sister) working for UNHCR as a staff member on any contract type or as an affiliate at the time of application.
*Recent graduates are considered to be candidates who completed their studies within two years of applying for an internship with UNHCR.

Conditions

It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be home-based.

Allowance

Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
