The Role

The Finance Team plays a critical role in sustaining and enabling Mercy Corps Netherlands (MCNL) growth through the support it provides to Field Teams and Headquarters.

Working with colleagues in Europe, and US, and as a member of a relatively new team in the Netherlands, the role encompasses different areas of responsibility, being a key finance function.

This is an opportunity to be involved in finance work that is fast-paced, and to be part of a diverse, dedicated team of people who are genuinely motivated by making a difference. The Finance Officer will have a pro-active, can-do approach, and be capable of taking ownership of the role and its responsibilities and continue to develop in the finance function of MCNL in line with the growth of the team and the programme portfolio.

Essential Job Responsibilities

A/P activities such as MCNL invoice, staff expense claims and advance processing

Bank and cash management, including payments and bank reconciliations

Payroll processing, payments and allocations

Processing all related ledger entries into the Finance Software

Inter(agency)company recharges, transaction allocation, monitoring and settlement of accounts

Process (uploading) of field ledger data and partner reporting

Manage the filing systems - electronic and hard copy

Induction and on-going training to staff on purchasing and finance processes and procedures

Support the Finance Manager with other accounting and finance processes as required

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Knowledge and Experience

University or HBO degree in a related field

Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar accounting and/or finance role

Understanding of accounting procedures and standards

Experience of computerized accountancy packages. Experience in SUN systems an advantage, though not a requirement

Proficiency with MS Excel required

Excellent spoken and written English, with working knowledge of Dutch

Some experience of working in or with an NGO would be desirable but not required

Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions

This position is based in The Hague, The Netherlands, with flexibility to work from home

Although we do not expect this position to travel, Mercy Corps team members represent the agency both during and outside work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a short-term assignment or a trip to country offices. Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all Mercy Corps locations.
