The Position:

The Youth Peace and Security Programme Specialist will be providing technical, programmatic and operational support to the UNFPA’s work in the area of peacebuilding, with a special focus on youth, peace and security, and the humanitarian action. You will report directly to the Deputy Representative under the overall guidance and supervision of the Country Representative.

Job Purpose:

Building up on UNFPA’s central role in the UN system’s work on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) and the Strategic Plan’s focus on “complementarity among development, humanitarian and peace responsive efforts” as one of six “accelerators”; promoting peaceful and inclusive societies is critical to achieve the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, including directly contributing to SDG 16.

UNFPA Ethiopia Country Office started working on Youth, Peace and security since the beginning of 2023 through hiring an individual consultant to support the Ethiopia peacebuilding initiatives on line with the peace agreement signed in November 2022. However the work requires support and expertise at the country office level for long term as a result, UNFPA Ethiopia Office is seeking for a TA with extended period of engagement to support the peace building initiative under the Humanitarian Development and Peace nexus.

Therefore the main purpose of this role is to support and strengthen the Country Office’s technical capacity on the Youth Peace and Security Agenda and. The TA will be responsible for providing, technical, programmatic and operations support to UNFPA’s work in the area of peacebuilding, with a special focus on youth, peace and security and humanitarian action.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:

Advanced university degree (Masters) in a relevant field of expertise (e.g. social sciences, public health, development, demography or, other related fields)

Experience and Knowledge:

At least 7 years of international experience with youth work, advocacy, capacity building, project writing, reaching marginalized populations, of the 7 years at least 5 years must be related to building social cohesion, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, sustaining peace, youth peace and security or related field. Knowledge of fundraising, relevant donors and their requirements especially from the Peace Building Support Office (PBSO)of UN Secretariat. Prior experience of working with UN Agencies and familiarity with UNFPA’s work and mandate and experience of working in the Eastern and Southern Africa Region (EECA) would be an asset. Strong communication and facilitation skills.

Languages:

Fluency in English; knowledge of other official UN languages, preferably French is an asset.
