1. Organizational Setting and Work Relationships

The Office of the UNHCR was established on 14 December 1950 by the UN General Assembly. The agency is mandated to provide protection (including assistance) and to seek durable solutions for refugees.
The Energy Assistant /Intern would normally receive guidance from Energy Officer in the operation/bureau/division. The incumbent may receive indirect guidance from other sections and units relevant to the country/region programme(s). The Energy Assistant will amongst other things support the implementation of BADEA Project.

BADEA project will facilitate the solarization of public lighting in the three (Mantapala, Meheba, and Mayukwayukwa) refugee settlements and host communities in Zambia and solarisation of education and health facilities in Mantapala and Mayukwayukwa refugee settlements and host communities where there is a need for access to electricity. Table below gives the key stakeholders and their roles.
Organization/Ministry Role in the project
Ministry of Energy (MoE) and Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security (Commissioner for Refugees-COR) The core ministries have the primary responsibility for achieving project objectives; they will provide on-going administrative, programmatic, technical, and financial oversight including overall management and coordination of the project. They will lead in communication with REA.

Rural Electrification Authority (REA) REA is responsible for designing, installation and sustainability of solar PV systems in refugee settlements and surrounding areas.
UNHCR Technical, assessments & programmatic support, capacity building and mobilization of resources.

UNHCR seeks to engage interns with diverse academic backgrounds, profiles, educational experience and knowledge in various professional fields, who may bring innovative thinking and different ideas to the Organization. The work of UNHCR benefits broadly from increased linkages and exchanges, formal and informal, with academia globally through interns. The work of interns is expected to contribute to UNHCR delivering on its mandate for refugees and asylum-seekers, returnees, stateless people and internally displaced persons, while helping the Organization remain relevant in the competitive humanitarian environment.

UNHCR provides interns with a learning opportunity to gain knowledge and practical experience related to their academic programme or future work in a field related to UNHCR's mission. By being directly exposed to the work of the Organization, interns have the chance to develop their skills and aptitudes.

2. The project is expected to catalyse the attainment of the following impacts:

• Improved education, health, and safety for the PoC and the host communities as they are benefiting from the health centres and schools in the settlement.
• Reduced gender-based violence at night and mitigate the respective risks.
• Reduced cases of theft and vandalism at night.
• Increase in night-time dynamics (e.g., studying, health care emergencies response, community and economic activities, movement patterns).
• Strengthened people's feeling of security and increased productive and leisure time.
• Improved peoples' income and autonomy through skills transfer in the field of solar energy (SDG 4). The trained technicians and advocates will be able to put these skills into action in the settlements immediately and thereafter, by prolonging the life of solar equipment that has been installed, enhancing climate action (SDG 13) and by developing economic activities (SDG7). Beneficiaries will be able to continue to pass on their skills to others and will thus create a virtuous circle centred on maintaining electrical supplies (SDG 8).
• Reduced inequalities by training technicians and advocates from refugee settlements and host communities to foster intercultural cohesion (SDG 10), targeting men and women to promote an inclusive and sustainable workforce; Campaigns will be conducted to encourage women to participate in the trainings (SDG 5).
• Reduced environmental impact by replacing the use of fossil fuels by renewable sources of energy, by improving people's ability to repair and maintain electrical equipment, and by setting up mechanisms for collecting defective devices coupled with an awareness of circular economy principles (SDG 13).

3. Duties

Under the direct supervision of Energy Officer, the UN Community Intern will:

• Ensure the involvement and buy-in of all relevant local stakeholders including local and national Governments to the process of designing BADEA project and new climate action projects for PoCs and host communities, that data collection and assessment work is conducted in an ethical manner, in line with all relevant national and UNHCR guidelines.
• Organize technical missions and fieldwork, drafting mission agendas and organising the logistics and access permissions and do so in close collaboration with other technical units e.g. WASH, health, education etc.
• Participate in the energy baseline survey that will highlight the energy requirements, and informing the design and choice specific, appropriate Renewable Energy Systems to be deployed in settlements and Lusaka.
• Provide Capacity building (community-based approaches on management, operation and maintenance of solar mini-grids and public lights).
