The Department

The Corporate Accounting Department performs a vital function for Mercy Corps globally, interacting with all other departmental functions of the Agency to provide meaningful financial information to employees, management, donors, and regulators. Corporate Accounting works closely with the International Finance Department to provide monthly consolidation of over 40 countries and several subsidiaries financial information. Corporate Accounting generates Mercy Corps' Europe consolidated audited financial statements and supports other external financial reports. Mercy Corps Netherlands (MCNL) was established in December 2017. MCNL, Mercy Corps Europe (MCE) and Mercy Corps Global (MCG) operate as one global organization, sharing the same mission, vision, core values and charitable objectives, as well as operational resources for the support and implementation of programme activities.

The Position

The Corporate Accounting Manager will support optimizing the accounting and finance function at Mercy Corps Headquarters in Europe. The role is responsible for daily operations of the accounting team and the monthly closing process for our consolidated accounts. The role provides support in relation to regulatory and donor requirements for Mercy Corps in the Netherlands.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day accounting transactions (including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets, and Payroll transactions and data) with a focus on process improvement, internal controls, and customer service
  • Manage data transfers between the Resource Development (fundraising), Payroll, Timekeeping, and International Finance Departments.
  • Manage the monthly close process, maintain the close calendars, and approve monthly journal entries as required, working in partnership with International Finance, Resource Development, IT, Payroll, Operations and Treasury Departments. Align the close calendar with internal reporting requirements for MCE, MCNL, and the US team.
  • Collaborate effectively as a team member on high-impact, cross-functional projects with interdependent finance teams. Evaluate project goals, timelines, and resource allocation needs. Develop and manage a detailed financial work plan, ensuring alignment with project objectives and dependencies across finance sub-teams.
  • Review monthly account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and resolution of outstanding items.
  • Support finance teams as needed and provide input into the testing and design of new processes and systems relating to accounting operations.
  • Manage the documentation of the accounting processes to ensure they are up to date. Lead on external financial and regulatory audits and related compliance as required.
  • Provide support for the preparation and development of annual financial reporting as well as monthly management accounts. Working closely with other team members to respond to audit queries and working with the European Financial Controller to prepare the financial statements in accordance with local financial reporting frameworks.
  • Assist in financial related queries for large institutional donors as well as government agencies and regulators in the Netherlands in order to provide accurate and timely information to external stakeholders; keeps up to date with relevant regulations, requirements and expectations related to financial management and oversight in the Netherlands and informs the Financial Controller of relevant changes or risks
  • Backstop accounting team members as necessary.
  • As necessary, support the international finance function and the MCNL Managing Director in responding to donor payment requests and donor audits.
  • Oversee and ensure all accounting practices comply with relevant taxing authorities, including tax regulations and reporting requirement related to payroll, pensions and social security, value-added tax, and corporation tax in the Netherlands. Provide accounting support to Mercy Corps stakeholders.
  • Support with treasury related functions in the Netherlands, and helps navigate or resolve requests from the bank in the Netherlands, as may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
