Associate Scientist: Agroforestry and carbon development- Uganda

Overview The position aims to enable effective design, implementation, coordination and management of integrated restoration livelihood and carbon projects in Uganda. The job holder assists in the implementation, capacity development of partners and support field staff in farmer training on agroforestry related topics; monitoring and evaluation activities; research, analyses and technical and donor reporting. The incumbent will supervise field assistants and community-based facilitators.

Duties and responsibilities

1. Research Support.

· Support the design and undertake research in agroforestry, restoration, tree nutrition and gender,

· Collect, analyze, and summarize research data, conduct literature review and / prepare technical papers, policy briefs manuals, guidelines, training and workshop reports and other relevant documents.

· Contribute to development, validation and deployment of various protocols and tools.

2. Extension Support.

· Develop protocols, manuals and provide technical training and support to consortium partners and other stakeholders on agroforestry practices including FMNR, ANR, soil water conservation, bioenergy, tree planting, and management.

· Lead action research and co-learning activities with consortium partners, field assistants and community facilitators lead farmers.

3. Monitoring, evaluation, and learning.

· Support PMEL processes; i) working with other CIFOR ICRAF staff build the capacity of the implementing partners and lead farmers to establish baseline conditions and track outputs and option uptake; ii) participate in quarterly monitoring and review exercises providing relevant background work and documentation.

· Support implementation of impact assessment strategy including supporting and coordinating quality control in biophysical/biomass baseline, tree tracking and end line data collection processes and complementary qualitative follow-up assessments.

4. Program management.

· As the Restore Africa Uganda Focal Point coordinate CIFOR ICRAF input into the program.

· Support the co-designing of project strategies with national lead organization and partners.

· Support production of project implementation plans and progress reports

· Support the undertaking of ESGI and project performance management.

· Organize workshops, conferences on the projects and training of the partners.

· Prepare papers, power points, posters, and other forms for presentation in the meetings, workshops, etc.

Requirements

A PhD in a field related to agroforestry, forestry, agriculture; natural resources management, climate change mitigation/adaptation.
Over 5 years-experience in programs coordination and management with two () years of supervisory experience in an agricultural, forestry or environmental organization
