1.     Organizational Context

 

a.    Organizational Setting

 

The position is located in the Traditional Knowledge Division. The Division facilitates international negotiations on intellectual property (IP) and genetic resources (GRs), traditional knowledge (TK) and traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) and undertakes a wide range of complementary practical capacity-building activities and skills-development and technical assistance projects for the benefit of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, Member States and regional organizations.

 

b.    Purpose Statement

 

The main roles of the incumbent are to assist in the design, planning, organizing and implementing of the skills-development and technical assistance projects of the Division and to contribute towards and coordinate the Division's outreach and promotional activities.

 

c.    Reporting Lines

 

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Director of the Traditional Knowledge Division and/or his delegate.

 

d.    Work Relations

 

The incumbent works closely with other WIPO programs and Member States, the United Nations, intergovernmental organizations and other stakeholders, especially Indigenous Peoples as well as local communities.

 

 

2.      Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:

 

a.   Prepare programs and materials for national, regional and international briefings and other general awareness-raising activities related to the subjects covered by the Division and make the practical arrangements for and participate in such activities;

 

b.   Organize and participate in technical assistance projects and practical capacity-building and skills-development programs on intellectual property, especially for members of Indigenous Peoples as well as local communities, such as the Division's training, mentoring and match-making program for entrepreneurs from Indigenous Peoples as well as local communities;

 

c.   Assist in designing, planning, promoting and implementing an annual or bi-annual WIPO Photography Prize for Indigenous Youth;

 

d.   In collaboration with the Information and Digital Outreach Division (IDOD), assist with overseeing the launch, maintenance and promotion in 2024 of a WIPO Virtual Exhibition on the subjects covered by the Division;

 

e.   In collaboration with the News and Media Division (NMD), assist with the sourcing, creation and production of content showcasing the Division's services, projects and activities (such as feature stories, interviews, social media posts, short films and podcasts) for dissemination through WIPO's corporate communications channels and the Division's Facebook page and other channels, and manage the Division's Facebook account, in line with Organization-wide approaches;

 

f.    In collaboration with the IDOD, on an ongoing basis, produce new and update existing web content for the Division's webpages on the Internet and Intranet, in line with Organization-wide approaches;

 

g.   Plan and help prepare regular brief news items related to the Division's work; design and prepare infographics and presentations as requested; maintain a quarterly schedule of relevant WIPO and other international events, including the annual World IP Day, and propose outreach and promotional activities linked to those events; assist with preparation of materials for Wikipedia; and,

 

h.   Perform any other duties as may be required in relation to the Division's activities.

 

 

3.      Requirements

 

Education (Essential)

First-level university degree in law, international relations, development studies, anthropology, sociology, communications or a related field.

 

Education (Desirable)

Project management certification.

 

Experience (Essential)

At least three years of professional experience including in designing, organizing and delivering practical capacity-building activities and skills-development and/or technical assistance projects.

 

Professional experience in creating written and/or audio-visual content for public dissemination, including through social media.

 

Experience in working with and for the benefit of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

 

Familiarity with the principles of intellectual property protection, especially in relation to the protection of innovations and creations based on traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and/or genetic resources.

 

Experience (Desirable)

Experience in managing complex projects.

 

Language (Essential)

Good written and spoken knowledge of English.

 

Language (Desirable)

Good knowledge of written and spoken Spanish.

 

Knowledge of other United Nations languages.

Excellent presentation skills; the ability to engage the attention of audiences and convey complex concepts and ideas in an accessible manner.

 

Excellent creative writing skills, especially in short-form story telling for dissemination through social media.

 

Proficiency with IT skills and software used for the creation and generation of written and/or audio-visual content for public dissemination, including through social media.

 

Sound knowledge of project management.

 

Understanding of the development concerns and needs in various countries, especially those of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

 

Excellent time-management and organizational skills. A structured and organized approach to tasks, including detailed planning ahead and meeting deadlines.

 

Ability to work both on own initiative and as a member of a team.

 

Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the internet.

 

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

 

Job Related Competencies (Desirable)
