The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) are seeking a highly motivated candidate to provide support to our fundraising and outreach in Belgium. The Development and Outreach Department is led by the Deputy Executive Director (DED) of Development and Global Initiatives and handles the fundraising and outreach activities of Human Rights Watch. The Associate reports to the Senior Director, Belgium, based in Brussels.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assisting with the organization and coordination of events, such as meetings, events and annual dinners;
  2. Overseeing preparation materials;
  3. Managing the administration of all gifts including processing, tracking and acknowledging gifts using HRW’s Raiser’s Edge database;
  4. Liasing with the King Baudouin Foundation (KBF) to supervise incoming donations on their ‘Friends of Human Rights Watch Fund’ account and coordinating the signature of the HRW-KBF convention to transfer the donations to the headquarter of HRW;
  5. Ensuring accurate and timely recording of all gifts, contact information and providing reports when necessary;
  6. Responding to requests for information and corresponding with donors, foundations, friends and partners, including the creation of mailings;
  7. Assisting the Director to identify, cultivate, service, and solicit individual donors, prospects and Committee members;
  8. Providing support including scheduling internal and external meetings, creating agendas, preparing background materials, drafting minutes and conducting follow-up meetings;
  9. Coordinating and managing the development of content for newsletters, social media, mailings, programs, presentations;
  10. Assisting with departmental recruiting and training of interns and volunteers;
  11. Processing expenses, answering phones and emails and processing incoming development mail;
  12. Assisting with travel arrangements and follow-up;
  13. Maintaining extensive files, contact lists and databases; performing tasks including filing, photocopying, scanning, faxing, word processing, maintaining databases, maintaining contact lists and subscriptions, bulk mailings, report filing and tracking; and
  14. Carrying out other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, social sciences, or related studies is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Prior office/administration experience is required.
  2. Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; fluency in other languages such as French and Dutch is highly desirable.
  4. Ability to work well under pressure and to manage multiple priorities while working effectively toward deadlines is required.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within Human Rights Watch as well as with external partners are required.
  6. Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally are required.
  7. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  8. Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications is required; experience with Raiser’s Edge or other donor databases is desirable.
  9. Experience with event planning, community engagement, and/or philanthropy is preferred.
  10. Strong interest in human rights is desirable.
