Background

Welthungerhilfe is a private, non-profitmaking, politically independent and non-denominational organization that supports people living in deprivation and poverty, irrespective of the color of their skin, their religious beliefs or their worldview. WHH is working in the fields of development cooperation and humanitarian aid, relief aid, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.

Description of duties:

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Security Advisor, the Security Officer provides efficient and effective support to the WHH activities, staff and assets in the Syria (Azaz) office; in particular:

Reporting/Information gathering and sharing

  • Establish and maintain a network of security contacts including (but not limited to) Local Authorities /specifically police, military and local government where appropriate), UN, NGOs, and Civil Society Groups.

  • Write WHH security reports/updates as requested by the immediate supervisor.

  • Keep the incident tracking database for Syria updated daily.

  • Ensure Incident Reports are written correctly and submitted in a timely manner.

Representation

  • Attend and actively participate in the relevant external meetings in the area.

  • Attend and actively participate in WHH internal meetings as required.

Support to program/projects

  • Conduct regular field security monitoring visits to existing WHH project locations.

  • Conduct field/location security assessments to potential needs in the project areas and make security-related recommendations.

  • Perform the basic security training to staff.

Policies and Procedures

  • Draft and review of security-related SOPs and security management/policy documents.

Vehicle Security

  • Ensure vehicles have appropriate equipment.

  • Ensure vehicles are appropriate for conditions.

  • Ensure drivers have appropriate security-related training.

  • Perform monitoring field trips with regular communications checks.

Facilities Security

  • Ensure WHH offices are appropriately secured and international staff housing meets minimum standards.

  • Ensure that firefighting equipment well maintained, and staff trained on its use.

  • Any other relevant duties as requested by the immediate supervisor.

Qualification Required:

Education: Bachelor's Degree or relevant vocational training

Working experience: Minimum 3 years of working experience with an INGO/NGO. Experience in local security organs such as Police/Military is an asset.

Skills: A detailed understanding of security and cultural context of Syria (especially the opposites-controlled areas)

Personality requirements: Ability to integrate into a transcultural team, hardworking, good communication skills, ability to motivate and develop skills of others, attentive to detail, co-operative, ability to work calmly under difficult and sometimes stressful conditions, availability to spend a good part of working time on the field

Language Skills: Fluent English and Arabic (Written and spoken) are required. Proven report skills in the English language and the ability to provide analysis on the security context is an asset. Turkish would be looked upon favorably.
