Setting and ReportingThe Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. To this end, the work of the Department is aligned under a clear mission, to enable United Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and solutions. The Department has embarked on a series of reforms to reconceptualize security as an enabler of UN programmes within acceptable risk. New strategic initiatives focus on improving the quality of evidence-based planning and foresight scenarios required to strengthen UNDSS response in the field and ensure continued programmatic delivery and support to UN organizations in complex emergencies and deteriorating security situations. This position is located in the Resilience and Emergencies Service (RES), in the Office of the Under- Secretary-General for Safety and Security, based in New York and will report to the Senior Programme Officer, Operational Resilience Section (ORS). The incumbent may be required to travel to the field to support UNDSS response to escalating or sudden onset emergencies. The Security Information Analyst, Foresight will lead on collecting, merging, analyzing and communicating trends on security and crisis risk criteria of relevance to UNDSS that enhance the Department’s ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to complex security challenges that impact UN operations globally thus fostering stability, security, and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Sustained Peace agendas. For more information on the Department, and how we make an impact on the world in enabling the achievement of SDGs, visit: https://www.un.org/undss/ ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Security Information Analyst may be responsible for the following duties: • Advises and provides guidance on regional and country crisis risks; prepares briefing materials such as periodic crisis risk updates and advisories on crisis and security threats for DSS senior management; participates in development of procedures for foresight development, contributing with preparation and review of crisis risk-related briefs for UN and other key decision makers related to current/significant events in various areas. • Contributes to the preparation of security plans for countries, regions, or geographic areas by conducting regional and country-specific security threat and crisis risk assessments for the UN. • Analyses trends of crisis risk, and security incidents affecting the organizations of the UN System using internal and external data sources to strengthen data-driven decision making. • Develops assessments on emerging security threats and crisis risks using data-driven approaches to support decision making for field operations, planning, and real-time readiness and response capabilities, for dissemination to relevant clients. • Prepares early warning reports and develops indicators to monitor crisis risks and security threats as a planning tool for DSS Senior Management. • Establishes lines of communication with focal points within the Inter-Agency Security Management Network (IASMN) for coordination of crisis and security threat assessment requirements; liaises with the Organizations of the UN System and Member States on the development of crisis and security threat information; communicate with relevant clients to disseminate processed information on strategic assessments on trends of crisis and security threats in related regions. • Prepares analytical reports on information relevant to security and crisis risk forecasting, including identification of internal and external data sources, their collection, collation, analysis and maintenance, to identify global trends of relevance to UNDSS to inform DSS foresight planning at the headquarters and field levels. • Performs other analytical and research assignments and tasks as required. Work ExperienceAt least seven years of progressively responsible experience in applied military, police, political, humanitarian or related field predictive analysis is required. At least two years of international experience in a multilateral organization in the field of criminology, corporate security, or in humanitarian or development programmes is required. Experience in the analysis of crisis risks is desirable. Experience in the preparation of analytical reports using data analytics platforms, data visualization applications or business intelligence tools (MS PowerBI, Qlik, Tableau, SAP Business Objects, ArcGIS or similar) is desirable. Experience with MS O365 and cloud technologies in the context of information management or data analysis is desirable. Experience within the UN or similar international organization is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
