PURPOSE OF POSITION

 

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization. The objective of the IARC is to promote international collaboration in cancer research.

 

The Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology “ENV” Branch focuses on environmental and lifestyle risk factors, whose knowledge and understanding are critical for effective primary prevention of cancer due to their modifiable nature. ENV’s objectives are achieved through the conduct of collaborative international epidemiological studies, including coordination of international consortia and through the initiation of focused analytical, often multi-country, epidemiological studies.

 

The aim of the position is to provide support to the Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology Branch (ENV) in data acquisition, database design, data capture design, data management and analysis.

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the supervision and guidance of the Deputy Branch Head, ENV, and other senior scientific staff in the branch, the incumbent performs the following tasks:

1.      To assist in the design, technical implementation, documentation, and maintenance of complex databases architecture using the most appropriate IT solutions.

2.      To assist in the design, technical implementation, documentation, and maintenance of data capture systems including on paper, online, and on mobile/smart phones using appropriate Software

3.      To assist in the periodical updating and manipulation of large databases, ensuring validity, completeness, and internal consistency of data.

4.      To assist in the setting up and monitoring of data flow from collaborating centres and correspondence with collaborators, merging of data and quality control checks.

5.      To assist in the setting up of digital solutions for information collection in fieldwork studies, monitoring of data quality, preparing data for statistical analyses, implementing statistical calculations according to instructions, , preparing output such as graphs and tables based on the analyses.

6.      To regularly document activities in data processing and analyses.

7.      To be data steward of the Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology Branch including keeping the overview of IT used in the branch. To perform any other related duties that may be required by the supervisors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Essential: Graduation from secondary school or equivalent, and subsequent training (BTS, DUT or equivalent) in the field of bioinformatics, life sciences, computer science/programing, statistics or related field.

Desirable: University degree in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, or related field.

 

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Essential: At least three years’ experience in the field of statistical/computer analysis.

Desirable: Experience in: 

a)      Using statistical packages and databases.

b)      Programming data collection applications.

c)      Epidemiology or medical science.

 

USE OF LANGUAGE SKILLS

Essential: Good knowledge of English.

 

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

·        Knowledge and familiarity of relevant software such as Stata or R for statistics and Microsoft SQL Server for data management

·        Proven ability to prepare graphics, present data and edit reports using standard office software such as Word, Excel and Access.
