The Program

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh delivers Australia’s bilateral development cooperation program in Cambodia. The program comprises investments in a range of sectors including agriculture, health, trade, infrastructure, and social inclusion including gender-based violence.

Cambodia Aid Advisory Services (CAAS) will provide long and short-term advisory and non-advisory support to the Australian Embassy, Phnom Penh to enable the effective and efficient delivery of development cooperation to meet Australia’s foreign, economic and development policy objectives in Cambodia. The advisory services will also support the Cambodia COVID-19 Development Response Plan (2020-22), its successor plan and evolving program pipeline.

The Position

The Public Diplomacy Officer will be responsible for leading the Embassy’s public diplomacy agenda, including strategic planning, campaign implementation, budget management and evaluation, as well as managing its social media and online presence. Furthermore, this position will lead the coordination of the Embassy’s official functions and events.

Other key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Leading official events and functions, from small gatherings to large, national day events;
  • Seeking creative ways to increase the public understanding of Australia’s foreign affairs, development and trade policies through the effective use of social media;
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with key contacts in government, private sector organisations, media and alumni of Australian institutions, including potential sponsors;
  • Managing a small team of locally engaged staff;
  • Identifying cultural developments to maximise public diplomacy opportunities;
  • Proactively seeking opportunities to raise the Australian Embassy’s profile; and
  • Communicate effectively with all areas of the Embassy to ensure a comprehensive media plan.

The Person

The successful candidate will possess tertiary qualifications in Communications, Media or a related field. The Public Diplomacy Officer will possess excellent organisational skills in event planning and management, strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage conflicting priorities. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain a network of diplomatic, media and event management contacts. You will be a collaborative team-player, who possesses excellent English language skills. Khmer language skills are highly desirable. The successful candidate will bring proven experience in managing public diplomacy campaigns and a strong online presence, including social media.

This is a locally engaged position and open to Residents of Cambodia only.
