Terms of ReferenceOrganizational Context:
UNHCR supports the Government who coordinates the refugee and migrant response in the development of policy, capacity building and targeted interventions in the areas of reception, asylum procedures and for finding durable solutions, with a focus on integration. UNHCR also has multiple interventions in core areas of Child Protection, GBV and areas addressing specific needs of persons of concern. The Office retains a readiness to respond to emergencies and new arrivals, with a focus on immediate support to the most vulnerable.
The Intern Protection (GBV) will be part of the Community-Based Protection Team of the Country Office of UNHCR Greece, contributing to the GBV-related activities with the communities of urban Athens area. The incumbent will be involved in GBV-related activities, focusing on the liaison and communication with asylum-seekers and refugees and their capacity building on GBV-related issues. The incumbent will report to the Protection Associate of the Community-Based Protection Unit of the Country Office of UNHCR Greece, who defines work processes and provides regular advice and guidance. The incumbent will also work closely with other protection staff members and the information management team. The Protection Intern (GBV) will have frequent contacts involving the exchange of a wide range of information, some of which may be complex and sensitive. The role requires high ethical standards, discretion, and the ability to handle highly confidential information in a professional manner. The incumbent will perform the following duties.
Duties and Responsibilities
The purpose of this internship is to enable young professional to gain direct protection experience in a challenging UNHCR operation and also to support Protection Unit of the UNHCR Greece Country Office in timely and efficient implementation of planned protection activities aiming to meet the needs of persons of concern in the urban Athens area.
The Protection Intern (GBV) will perform the following duties:
• Support outreach to asylum-seekers and refugees residing in urban Athens, through communities and other social media channels and methodologies;
• Support with the organisation and participate in meetings and info sessions with asylum-seekers and refugees on GBV-related matters. Support the facilitation of the meetings with community representatives, in person or remotely;
• Compile, clean and enter the statistical data into the GBV protection database, draft reports and minutes, routine correspondence and update relevant databases;
• Support in the drafting of GBV analyses to be used for the purpose of advocacy;
• Participate in regular protection monitoring activities and deliver information sessions, focusing on selected protection themes, including GBV and trafficking;
• Support UNHCR protection staff in their communication with the asylum-seekers and refugees through WhatsApp groups, e-mail lists, etc., focusing on GBV-related matters;
• Liaise and coordinate with community focal points, mainly on GBV-related matters;
• Refer cases to service providers, as needed;
• Support participatory assessment, focus group discussions and participatory observation in urban Athens;
• Support in preparations for the 16 days of activism against GBV;
• Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum qualifications required
• Ability to work with people from different cultural and religious backgrounds;
• Respect for difference and have good understanding of how age, gender and diversity affect refugee protection;
• Fluency in English;
• Good knowledge of Greek;
• Knowledge of one or more of the following languages: Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Lingala, Pashto, Russian, Somali, Tigrinya, Turkish and Ukrainian (desired);
• Computer literacy;
• Strong listening and communication skills;
• Previous experience with working with refugees is an asset (including volunteering);
• Commitment to continuous learning.
Eligibility Requirements:
In order to be considered for the internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be a recent graduate* or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO;
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization;
- Not have immediate relatives (father, mother, brother, or sister) working for UNHCR as a staff member on any contract type or as an affiliate at the time of application.
(* Recent graduates are to be considered those persons who graduated within two years of applying for an internship with UNHCR. )
Additional Information:
The duration of this internship is 6 (six) months.
The hiring office will provide to interns, who do not receive financial support from a third party, a Food and Local Transportation Allowance calculated in USD and normally payable in local currency via bank transfer.
Shortlisted candidates will have to undergo an oral interview.
Recruitment as a UNHCR intern is subject to proof of vaccination against Covid-19.
