Action Against Hunger is seeking a new Direct Response Officer to join our development team.

Action Against Hunger leads the global movement to end hunger. We innovate solutions, advocate for change, and reach 24 million people every year with proven hunger prevention and treatment programs. As a nonprofit that works across 50 countries, our 8,300 dedicated staff members partner with communities to address the root causes of hunger, including climate change, conflict, inequity, and emergencies. Action Against Hunger USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network. As an independent NGO, Action Against Hunger USA currently manages operations in 8 countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia, and Haiti. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $100 million in programs and approximately 1,800 permanent staff based in New York City, Washington D.C, Nairobi, and country offices. Additional growth is anticipated.

Action Against Hunger currently has a hybrid work policy that requires at least two days in the office per week and proof of COVID-19 vaccination. The organization has offices in New York City and Washington, DC.

  1. Job Summary

    The Direct Response Officer plays a critical role in fundraising from new and multi-year direct marketing donors by rolling out campaigns to both offline and digital supporters. The Officer will be the project manager for our direct response campaigns to expand our reach to donors.

    Purpose: The Direct Response Officer will manage digital and offline renewal, upgrade, reactivation, and stewardship campaigns aimed at retaining one-time and monthly donors

    Engagement: The position will report to the Associate Director, Donor Marketing, and work very closely with the Donor Relations Associate, Donor Marketing, and Fundraising Systems teams.

    Delivery: Project manage and analyze direct response and stewardship campaigns to increase donor retention

  3. Oversee monthly giving campaigns
  4. Provide strategy and supervision towards efforts to upgrade, renew, and reactivate monthly donors
Engage with vendors to roll out email, telemarketing and voicemail broadcasting activities to thank, upgrade and reactivate monthly donors Manage monthly giving reporting and KPI measurement Work closely with the Donor Relations Associate to ensure that monthly donors receive excellent donor care and proactive outreach for lapsing and failed gifts

Manage Peer to Peer Fundraising Program Oversee the peer-to-peer donor program, Fundraise Against Hunger Manage Facebook Fundraiser campaigns, including acquiring, welcoming, stewarding, and cross selling

Project manage campaigns to offline supporters Work with direct mail vendor to roll out renewal and planned giving appeals to offline donors Drive the strategy and execution of offline stewardship touchpoints with support of the Donor Relations Associate, including but not limited to impact reports, thank you postcards, back-end premiums, and holiday/birthday/anniversary cards Update welcome process and collateral for offline supporters Collaborate with Fundraising Systems team on creating a dashboard for offline giving

Stewardship Activities Project manage stewardship activities like thank you calls, broadcast SMS messages, impact pieces and holiday cards Lead on Donor Appreciation Week

VI. Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

The duties of the job require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required by contact with the missions, mission security, or other obligations. Must be able to travel as required for standard domestic and international business travel as well as to the missions if appropriate. While visiting the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well as to infectious diseases.

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

IX. Required Skills & Experience

3+ years’ experience in a similar role Excellent project management skills and experience with project management tools Entrepreneurial and driven, with a previous track record in retention campaign management of both digital and “traditional” offline donors Previous vendor management experience essential Experience of monthly giving programs Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite as well as Raiser’s Edge or Salesforce CRMs Experience with digital fundraising platforms like Funraise, Classy etc Strong analytical skills High attention to detail as well as the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently Flexible and open to change within a growing team Passion for Action Against Hunger’s mission
