Work LocationHomebased Expected duration9-months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division is responsible for ecosystem management for human well-being, which covers biodiversity and ecosystem services, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, marine and coastal ecosystems, addressing the environmental causes and consequences of disasters and conflicts, adapting to climate change and a poverty and environmental initiative. The Marine and Coastal Ecosystems Unit has a unique mandate that supports the protection, restoration and conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems, sustainable blue economy transition, the implementation of Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) targets, and the ratification and implementation of the BBNJ agreement, among others. Projects and programmes underpinned by strong institutional and scientific networks and knowledge management platforms demonstrate best practices to conserve, restore and sustainably use the marine and coastal ecosystems as well as enhance ocean and sea governance. The consultant will directly report to the programme management officer in the Marine & Coastal Ecosystems Unit. Tasks and Responsibilities: The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) is a global partnership between nations and organizations which strives to preserve coral reefs and related ecosystems around the world. Although, the Initiative is an informal group whose decisions are not binding on its members, its actions have been pivotal in continuing to highlight the importance of coral reefs and related ecosystems to environmental sustainability, food security and social and cultural wellbeing. The work of ICRI is regularly acknowledged in United Nations documents, highlighting the Initiative’s important cooperation, collaboration and advocacy role within the international arena. On the 9-13 September 2024, the 38th ICRI General Meeting will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The consultant is expected to: develop an up-to-date database of ICRI members and analysis on ICRI members vs duties; produce a detailed documents for the 38th ICRI General Meeting in 2024, including summary record; report on the summary of ICRI’s activities at the CBD COP-16. 31 December 2024; develop an Implementation and Governance Plan for the Coral Reef Breakthrough; produce an ICRI 2024 Impact report for the activities of the ICRI Secretariat; and submit quarterly reports on ICRI communication efforts through its social media channels. Qualifications/special skillsAdvanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental science, social science, marine biology, sustainable development or related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics or data science programs is desirable. A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management delivering sustainable development and/or coral reef conservation is required. Experience in programme management within the UN or similar large institution is desirable. Experience working with and coordinating with diverse teams in multiple countries and contexts is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
