Work LocationHome-Based Expected duration7 days Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is mandated by the UN-General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat works with varied partners including cities, central governments, local authorities, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector in the implementation of the Habitat Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in particular, Goal 11 of “Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. As cities around the world rapidly urbanizing, they are increasingly facing urban mobility challenges key among them traffic congestion, pollution and road traffic crashes. The transport sector also significantly contributes to global energy related carbon emissions. Public transport comprising efficient bus systems, trams, metros and non-motorised mobility such as walking, and cycling are emerging an ideal mix to curb the growing urban transport challenges and meet the transport needs of citizens. UN-Habitat collaborates with governments at city, regional and national levels on development and implementation of policy, guides and tools for sustainable urban mobility; provides technical support for development of effective transport systems and supports knowledge, advocacy and capacity building. The consultancy position is in the Urban Mobility team under the Urban Basic Services Section of UN-Habitat. The consultant will provide technical advice and policy support to cities on sustainable and innovative mobility; undertake research on emerging urban mobility issues, and support the development of project proposals to expand the portfolio. UN-Habitat is the lead partner for the Global Alliance of Cities for Road Safety (ACRoS), funded by the United Nations Road Safety Fund, that aims to become a one-stop shop for cities to engage in capacity building, receive technical advice, implement catalytic action and benefit from city-to-city exchange. The main objective of ACRoS is to provide an open platform for cities to be inspired, learn and exchange in order to find the most appropriate local solutions to solve their road safety challenges while contributing to the climate goals. The work undertaken in this contract focuses on expected outcome 1 (O1); namely that “cities are inspired and capacitated to improve their road safety management in alignment with the Safe Systems Approach, and complementary to the national policy framework.” The Consultant will work under the overall supervision of the Coordinator of the Urban Basic Services Section, and in close collaboration with the thematic team on mobility, reporting to the Programme Management Officer, Urban Mobility Unit. In close coordination with UN-Habitat’s project manager, the consultant plays a supporting role in the implementation of this project, specifically on two main activities and related tasks: Responsibilities include: • Task 3.1: Identify desired functionality and develop design look of the ACRoS website. • Task 3.2: Domain registered and page construction • Task 3.3: Upload and develop content to populate initial website Qualifications/special skills• At least bachelor’s degree in urban, Regional or Transport Planning, International Relations and Affairs or Sustainable Development is required Four (4) years of relevant experience in organising public events, city exchange visits and workshops in the field of low carbon services. Demonstrated Knowledge in areas of climate change mitigation; sustainable urban mobility; SDGs is required. Knowledge of UN policies and procedures is an advantage. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, excellent fluency in oral and written English is required.
