Nature of Position:

The overall protection environment for refugee and asylum issues in the UK is increasingly challenging. Ahead of the next General Election (anticipated to take place in 2024) the passage of the Illegal Migration Act through the UK Parliament represents a further step away from the UK’s international obligations and constitutes an asylum ban – expanding further on the UK Government’s intention to externalise asylum through the transfer of asylum-seekers who arrive irregularly (or without authorisation) to Rwanda.

Under the supervision of the Legal Officer, the Senior Legal Associate will provide expert guidance to the office on proposed legislation and policy and UK immigration jurisprudence. S/he should have strong knowledge of international refugee and human rights law. As London is an international law centre of excellence, (academia, think-tanks and NGOs), the position requires a strong grasp of international protection principles and an ability to articulate them with authority. Given the complex and frequently changing legal context in the UK, strong expertise in common law jurisprudence and UK asylum and refugee law will be required to advance parliamentary, court and other interventions.

The primary focus on the Senior Legal Associate will be to assist the office in drafting legal analysis, developing policy positions, and keeping abreast of domestic and international refugee law jurisprudence. In addition, the incumbent will also be required to work closely with the Home Office through UNHCR’s Quality Protection Partnership (QPP) in in which UNHCR reviews and provides advice with respect to various aspects of the UK asylum system and stateless determination procedure aimed at strengthening the fairness and efficiency of protection pathways.

The position is based at UNHCR London 's offices near Chancery Lane.
