The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
The CSIS Australia Chair is seeking an energetic and innovative Senior Fellow to play a leading role in advancing the programmatic activities and research agenda for Australia Chair, the only program of its kind in the DC think tank landscape today. The Senior Fellow will be responsible for overseeing the Chair’s day-to-day operations and developing and leading in-depth research projects on Pacific Islands affairs that aim to shape key policy debates and inform both public and private organizations. Ideal candidates will have experience in research and policy development in U.S. national security policy in the Indo-Pacific region as well as a strong interest in U.S. alliances and partnerships, and the Pacific Island community.
The Senior Fellow must be agile and an ideas-generator, able to anticipate emerging issues of relevance to the U.S. and Australian governments, other allied governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations alike. The Senior Fellow should have deep knowledge about U.S. leadership and funding and understand how best to use the platform an independent think tank provides to move a policy agenda forward in Washington, Canberra, and beyond.
The minimum annual salary for this position is $100,000.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
Program Management
• Identify potential grant projects, research potential funders, and work with the Director in developing robust research proposals in line with the chair's priorities and research agenda
• Plays a leadership role in convening expert groups in both private and public fora, as well as participating in workshops, international exchanges, and conferences.
• Cultivate and grow an excellent professional network and liaise productively with other organizations
• Contribute to the thought leadership and strategic direction of the program
• Provide supervision and active mentoring of all staff. Collaborate with other CSIS programs
Research
• Conduct research and develop policy analysis to advance the Chair’s research agenda
• Write and publish reports, commentaries, articles, op-eds, and qualitative policy analysis to promote research findings and objectives
• Synthesize large amounts of information, perform qualitative analysis, and report results to diverse audiences
• Contribute to the intellectual vitality of the Chair by serving as a recognized expert in the field of Pacific Islands affairs
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
• M.A./M.S. required; PhDs also encouraged to apply.
• At least 7-10 years of professional experience in national security and Pacific Islands affairs
• Experience in managing personnel, projects, budgets, and grants strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and lead complex events and/or conferences.
• Superior writing, editing, analytical skills
• Strong communication and convening skills, including the ability to effectively present information.
• Substantive network in and connectivity to U.S. policy officials (U.S. agencies, executive branch, congressional members/staff) and influencers in the international affairs community.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to interact with and respond to questions from a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds, and dispositions from across a wide spectrum of views on foreign policy and national security.
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated success working in highly collaborative, team-based environments
• Candidates should possess sound judgment and impeccable integrity, entrepreneurial attitude, and creative outlook

Performances of duties require the use of hands and fingers to handle or feel. The job frequently requires ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
