The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity.  Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics is dedicated to providing thought leadership for the policy community about the dynamics of China’s economy and its implications for industries and other countries. Our work – research, publications, events & outreach – focuses on China’s overall economic trajectory, industrial policy, green tech and climate change, and US-China commercial relations.

The Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics is recruiting a full-time research associate who is highly motivated, professional, and has a strong interest in China’s political economy, domestic and international. The research associate makes substantive contributions to the research agenda of the program through research, data analysis, writing, and project management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

Conduct research on Chinese economic policy, specific sectors, the macro economy, and US-China commercial relations using quantitative data, primary documents, secondary analyses, and interview sources in both Chinese and English.

Provide research, draft text, and create figures for publications. Edit program publications, including reports, commentaries, and blog. Manage the program’s interns and related research. Coordinate with other CSIS programs on research and projects. Support the associate director and other administrative staff with event logistics, social media, and materials as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum degree is an M.A. in a related field (economics, political economy, political science, public policy, or international business).

Must have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution. Fluency in Chinese, the ability to work at a professional level with Chinese-language sources, and fieldwork experience in China. Demonstrated interest in how economic research speaks to public policy issues. Excellent research and writing experience. Experience with data collection (both Chinese and international data sources), quantitative analysis, and familiarity with Chinese economic policies. Demonstrated interest and experience in data visualization, graphics, and website management. Availability for occasional travel (4-8% of the year), both domestic and international, including to China. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
