Background

As the lead UN development agency, UNDP supports countries in their efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. UNDP is present in 170 countries around the world and works to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities. The UNDP Nordic Representation Office is located at the UN City in Copenhagen, with satellite offices in Stockholm, Oslo, and Helsinki. Together we work for distributing knowledge about UNDP’s work in the Nordic countries as well as coordinating the partnership with these key donors.

This 6-month internship position offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into UNDP’s work while being part of an international professional environment. UNDP Norway is a small office consisting of 3 permanent employees but is co-located with the UNDP Global Policy Centre for Governance in Oslo. The UNDP Norway intern will have the chance to participate in a variety of tasks and work with different regions and thematic fields. The tentative starting date for the internship is 1 August 2024.

Duties and Responsibilities

We are looking for one bilingual (Norwegian and English) intern to participate in the daily work of the UNDP Norway office in Oslo. As an intern, you will be given fixed assignments, but as we are a small and busy office, you must be comfortable taking on a variety of assignments and be prepared to contribute where and when needed. We would like to find someone who is structured, independent, creative, and takes initiative.

Tasks will include:

Attend meetings with Norwegian government officials and other partners from public and private sectorsDevelop analyses, briefings and background documents on Norwegian and international development policy related to missions and visitsAssist in preparing and coordinating launches of UNDP reports and other public events and missionsTranslate and distribute news, press releases and stories from English to Norwegian and vice versaMonitor Norwegian media on issues related to the work and mandate of UNDPHelp to promote awareness of UNDP’s mandate, work, and resultsUpdate and develop the Norwegian website no.undp.orgDistribute regular updates and content on UNDP’s social media platforms, especially X, Facebook, and InstagramVarious ad hoc tasks

Required competencies:

Higher education in a relevant field. Former interns have held degrees in areas such as development studies, human geography, political science, and economicsExcellent communications skills in English and Norwegian, both written and oralStrong interest in, and knowledge of global development and the work of international organisationsTeam player: works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goalsGood organizational and time management skillsAble to work independentlyGood social media skills

Advantageous competencies:

Knowledge of the UN/UNDP and commitment to UN mission and UNDP mandateKnowledge of web publication and photo editing toolsPrevious organizational experience or working experience from a developing country

Required Skills and Experience

Fluency in spoken and written Norwegian and English is required.
