Org. Setting and Reporting

The intern will be part of the Programme Development and Management Unit (PDMU) at UNODC
Headquarters, Vienna, Austria. The Programme Management and Development Unit (PDMU) is part of the Research and Analysis Branch (RAB), Division of Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA). PDMU provides programme development and management support to the Research and Trend Analysis Branch. The Unit is responsible for the management of research programmes on Illicit Crop Monitoring, Alternative Development, wildlife crime and crimes that affect the environment. Further, the Unit coordinates the development of new and/or cross-sectional research programmes and projects in line with the Thematic Programme of the Branch. PDMU provides programme management support and publication and dissemination services to the Drug Research Section, the Crime Research Section and the Data Development and Dissemination Unit.

The PDMU internship is for three months starting in May 2023 with an opportunity for extension, pending the need of the office.

Internships with Offices of the United Nations Secretariat are UNPAID and full-time, i.e., 5 days per week (40 hours).

The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

• Support the work of PDMU, including the development and management of new and/or cross-sectional research programs and projects, and all its on-going research activities (illicit crop monitoring, wildlife and crimes that affect the environment, alternative development);
• Assist in the development of project proposals and concept notes, including background research and budgeting;
• Assist in drafting of relevant research reports;
• Contribute to the drafting and production of communication products (press releases, web stories, social media), seeking input and information from colleagues, as well as supporting the launches of research products and other outreach events;
• Act as focal point and media liaison on issues related to research and the work of RAB, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc.
• Assist in the preparation of expert group meetings, events and other research related meetings and support related follow-up actions;
• Support the work of UNODC´s Global Research Network by facilitating meetings, distributing information, drafting communication;
• Perform other tasks as necessary. Competencies

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following
conditions must be met:

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate
school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the
final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or
equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected,
must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation (OFFICIAL PROOF
FROM THE UNIVERSITY TO SUPPORT ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE
ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

• Applicants for an internship must be enrolled in a full-time university degree programme
(Master's or equivalent) in a graduate school (second university degree or higher), or, if
applicants are pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into
undergraduate and graduate stages, they must have completed at least four years of full-time
studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree;

• Be computer literate in standard software applications; working knowledge of MS Word,
Excel, Power Point is required.

• Familiarity with drug and crime related matters are desirable.

• Applicants must have a keen demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and
have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage. Assessment

The intern should have:

- a keen interest in the countries covered by the illicit crop monitoring programme, including Afghanistan, Bolivia, Colombia, Lao PDR, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria and Peru.
