UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in Algiers, Algeria, is offering a full-time internship with the External Relations:

Organizational context:

UNHCR has been accredited to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, a signatory to the 1951 Convention relating to the status of refugees, since 1984. It provides protection and assistance to persons of concern in both, urban and camp settings. UNHCR’s operation in Algiers serves more than 10,000 refugees and asylum-seekers from the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. At the request of the Algerian authorities, UNHCR undertakes registration and status determination for asylum-seekers and helps them to secure durable solutions once recognized as refugees. Owing to natural and human-made crises regional and global in nature, there has been a sharp escalation in the number of individuals seeking asylum in Algiers. In 2022, these have numbered as high as 500 per month.

The position:

The External Relations Intern, under the supervision of the Representative, will provide support to the External Relations (ER) unit by assisting in event preparation, organizing unit archives and visibility materials, accompanying the protection unit colleagues in relevant events, and producing high-quality photo and video content.

Duties and responsibilities:

1. Event Preparation:
Assist in the preparation of events, with a focus on World Refugee Day.
Support event logistics, coordination, and documentation as needed.

2. Archive Organization:
Help organize the unit's archive and visibility materials.
Maintain and update team folders to ensure easy access to relevant information.

3. Accompanying Protection Colleagues:
Assist in covering protection activities with photos and videos for documentation and storytelling purposes.

4. Photography and Videography:
Capture high-quality photos and videos during events and activities.
Edit and produce compelling visual content that adds value to the organization's communication efforts.

Minimum qualifications required:

To be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school program from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and

• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

Desirable qualifications and skills:

• Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a relevant field (e.g., Photography, Film Studies, Communications, etc.).

• Proficiency in photography and videography techniques, including shooting, editing, and post-production.

• Familiarity with relevant software and tools for photo and video editing.

• Knowledge of English and French.

Conditions:

It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Sunday to Thursday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in person in Algiers, Algeria.

Allowance:

Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
