UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering an internship position within the External Relations unit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Organizational Context

UNHCR's Internship Programme offers eligible students and recent graduates the unique opportunity to gain hands-on practical work experience in the humanitarian sector in an international environment and to understand UNHCR's core mandate.

The External Relations Unit is primarily responsible for relations with the government and for mobilizing public, political and financial support for UNHCR. It is also tasked with maintaining relations with partners in the UN system and the NGO sector. It seeks to provide donors with a clear understanding of UNHCR’s objectives and resource requirements; and assists the Field and Headquarters to generate the information needed for this purpose.

The Position
UNHCR’s External Relations Unit in Riyadh is looking for a bright and motivated intern to support its activities for six months. We are seeking a dynamic and proactive team player with a strong interest in communication, public information, and partnerships to complete a six-month internship within the unit. He/she will work closely with the ER Officer and relevant team members to support and advance the objectives of the Unit. He/she will bring diverse skills and knowledge, innovative thinking, proactive and collaborative attitude and a strong sense of team cohesion and support.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision and guidance of the External Relations officer, the ER intern will support with the following:

• Monitoring UNHCR reports and situation updates and extract highlights for Internal and external briefing updates.
• Coordinating with relevant operations for drafting and shaping concept notes, proposals, and progress reports.
• Communicating with external partners by drafting relevant correspondence and following up on its dispatch and outcome.
• Monitoring political, policy, societal and economic developments to identify trends and partnership prospects
• Organising meetings, prepare relevant research and materials, and follow up on outcomes and action points execution.
• Other tasks as required.

Essential qualifications and professional experience required:
• Fluent Arabic and English spoken and written skills.
• Excellent communication skills with strong interpersonal skills.
• Familiarity with Saudi government, public, civil society and media institutions.
• Familiarity Awareness of humanitarian affairs
• Attention to detail and a results-oriented team player.

Location:
• The successful candidate will be based with the team in Riyadh. Our Office is in the Diplomatic Quarter, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
• Arrangements for travel, including travel arrangements to and from the location where the internship will be carried out, are the responsibilities of interns.

Eligibility
Candidate should:
• Be a recent graduate (graduated within 2 years from the time of application) from an accredited university or higher education institutions.
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a relevant field (e.g. political science, international relations, communication, law, public affairs…etc)
• Not have immediate relatives (father, mother, brother, or sister) working for UNHCR as a staff member on any contract type or as an affiliate at the time of application.

Conditions:
• The internship is for Six months. It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Sunday to Thursday.

• Non-citizen candidates will have to arrange for their own residency visa in Riyadh. Candidates holding valid Saudi residency visa are encouraged to apply. Kindly mention your residency status in the application.

• Recruitment as a UNHCR staff member and engagement under a UNHCR affiliate scheme or as an intern is subject to proof of vaccination against Covid-19.

Allowance:
• Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance of 6555 SAR (1750 USD) to partially help cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
