The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The Deputy Director of Digital Communications plays a senior role within CSIS’s External Relations team managing the Center’s social media platforms, developing comprehensive digital communications strategies, and working collaboratively with CSIS programs and scholars to deepen the impact of the Center’s research and analysis among key audiences.
The ideal candidate is highly motivated, entrepreneurial, a self-starter with strong initiative and drive, and a great team player who possesses excellent communication and editorial skills, attention to detail, project management skills, and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and innovative environment.

The minimum annual salary for this position is $85,000.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Oversee the Center’s social media outreach strategy, with a sharp focus on the development of innovative content and resonant messaging
• Lead strategy around the Center’s social and digital media advertising efforts, to include deploying sophisticated audience targeting techniques
• Assist with management of junior staff contributing to the Center’s social and digital media portfolio
• Partner with CSIS’s scholars and 30+ programs to develop strategic and impactful short- and long-term digital communications plans
• Work collaboratively CSIS’s iDeas Lab to amplify the Center’s suite of multimedia products and develop new digital outreach products
• Serve as a primary liaison with external stakeholders and partners to broaden the Center’s digital communications reach
• Conduct trainings and help develop guides and templates to enhance digital media efforts and promote best practices across the Center
• Stay up to date with current and emerging trends in digital media, deliver recommendations for the Center, and manage the use of new platforms and tools to support and further its mission and reach
• Assist with special initiatives as needed on a program-wide basis
• Other duties and support as needed


KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
• 5-7 years of relevant experience at a think tank, public relations firm, or in a Capitol Hill or Administration office; experience working in the fields of international relations and/or national security is strongly preferred
• Expertise with all major social media platforms, including X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and YouTube
• Strong editorial judgement, with a demonstrated ability to navigate complex subject material and develop corresponding messaging that resonates with and informs policymakers and thought leaders
• Proficiency with advanced digital advertising techniques and experience managing advertising budgets
• Experience leading the development of innovative digital communications tactics and products
• Experience working collaboratively with high-profile internal and external stakeholders
• Collegiality and an entrepreneurial work ethic is a must
