Background:
The National Statistical Office in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and with funding support from the Australian Government, has concluded the conduct of the Socio-Demographic and Economic Survey (SDES). The 2022 SDES is a nationally representative sample survey designed to generate indicators on population and demographic characteristics, labour and employment, migration, education, fertility, household, and housing characteristics. These indicators will be used to monitor the progress of the country in terms of the targets set in the Sustainable Development Goals, PNG Vision 2050, Medium-Term Development Plan III, and other monitoring tools of the government.
Several Thematic Reports, namely: i) Economic Well-Being of the Population, ii) Fertility/Mortality, iii) Demographic Dividend, iv) Migration, and v) Education are currently being prepared and expected to be completed starting next quarter. The SDES collected rich information that is vital for evidence-based plans and programmes. The recently released key indicators from the 2022 SDES revealed the following information for men and women:
To better understand the disparities between men and women in the country, there is a need for the services of a Gender Dimension Writer/Analyst to analyze the situation of men and women as reflected in the gender indicators and correspondingly recommend policies aimed at improving their conditions.
