Organizational Setting

 

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.
The Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) is part of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security and reports to the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department. The IEC serves as the IAEA's focal point for preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies regardless of their cause, and for strengthening Member States' preparedness for response.

 

Main Purpose

 

The purpose of this consultancy is to carry out formatting and technical editing of scientific/technical manuscripts, documents and training materials in the area of nuclear or radiological emergency preparedness and response (EPR), in compliance with international scientific editing and publishing standards and the IAEA's publishing policies and practices; ensure that the IAEA's quality standards are being met in all publications and materials; follow up on the production and publication of EPR related scientific/technical manuscripts, documents and training materials.

 

Functions / Key Results Expected

 

• Format and edit technical content in complex scientific and technical manuscripts, documents and training materials in English in compliance with international scientific editing and publishing standards and the IAEA's quality and publishing standards.
• Provide editorial quality control by ensuring the implementation of the IAEA's editorial standards in the preparation of English-language manuscripts, documents and training materials.
• In coordination with responsible division, provide technical advice and guidance to manuscript originators on the preparation and presentation of EPR scientific and technical manuscripts, documents and training materials.

 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • University degree in Communications or a relevant scientific/technical field. 

  • Minimum of five years of experience in technical editing.

  • Excellent editing skills in English and ability to edit complex scientific and technical texts, graphics and figures on-screen using MS Word.

  • Knowledge of formatting complex documents. Basic knowledge of InDesign is an asset.

  • Ability to deal successfully with the dual requirements of quality and timeliness in the production of EPR manuscripts, documents and training materials.

  • Organizational and planning skills and proven ability to establish and follow through on priorities and firm deadlines.

  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with internal and external counterparts and to work harmoniously in multicultural/multidisciplinary teams with respect and sensitivity for diversity.

  • Knowledge of terminology used related to nuclear and radiological topics.

  • Fluency in both, written and spoken English. Knowledge of another official IAEA language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) an asset.

     

    Remuneration

    The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 250, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
