Standard Job Description

Communications Assistant
Organizational Setting and Work Relationships

The Communications Assistant will report to the Communications Officer and will have regular contacts within the office/unit involving exchange of information. S/he will also have limited external contacts on routine matters.

All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. Duties
- Collect press-cuttings of articles in national, regional, international and periodicals that pertain to refugee related issues and to the work of the office.
- Compile and maintain the mailing list for press releases, information bulletins, etc and ensure timely despatch of information to media and other interested parties.
- Classify and maintain adequate stock of PI materials and promote sale of merchandise where appropriate.
- Maintain up-to-date the catalogue of PI material and types monthly report regarding sales and stocks for submission to PI at Headquarters in accordance with established guidelines.
- Provide clerical assistance with regard to PI events such as poster campaigns, exhibitions, and public awareness raising events.
- Respond to routine telephone and written enquiries from a variety of sources such as the media, the public, NGOs and government officials etc.
- Maintain PI files up-to-date.
- Have access to UNHCR's communication systems.

- Support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility. Ensure decision making in risk based in the functional area of work. Raise risks, issues and concerns to a supervisor or to relevant functional colleague(s).
- Perform other related duties as required.

Desired Candidate ProfileSuitable candidate: Kira Tuominen

Kira just finished her 8-months long internship with UNHCR RNB Communications and External relations team, during which she not only achieved all her objectives and set tasks but also outgrew the internship role in her performance.

This particular role – Communications Assistant – will be focusing on on-going events and developments in Finland and UNHCR’s objective to be more seen and heard in Finnish/Finland’s media. These are tasks and areas in which Kira already proved her knowledge and professionalism during her internship as she was heavily involved in following and analyzing Finnish media, developments related to border area between Finland and the Russian Federation, as well as the legislation and processes related to the new law proposals regarding reception of asylum seekers in Finland. Kira is Finnish native speaker and very much interested in the events happening in Finland and all the developments that are concerning UNHCR, human rights and protection of refugees and asylum seekers.

Overall, Kira has good knowledge of political and media situation in Finland, she has experience in working on migration and forced displacement issues, not only with UNHCR but also prior to this experience. She has experience in media relations and reaching out to media representatives and finding ways how UNHCR can get the key messages across; she has good experience in social media and graphic design. Kira has good knowledge of Finland’s and international laws related to migration, forced displacement, human rights etc.
She has proved to be a good team-player, good judgment regarding prioritizing tasks, works independently under pressure and knows when to reach out to the rest of the team for advice or support.
