Work LocationHome Based Expected duration4 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN- Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production center of the UN- Habitat that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practices and is the operational level responsible to undertake technical cooperation projects, such as ensuring universal access to basic services and infrastructure through construction of water and sanitation facilities, shelter and other work. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section (PFES) is responsible to support urban and territorial planning at all scales including through the development of planning policy, norms and guidelines, urban Design and public space design, urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance), and local economic development. UN-Habitat headquarters, regional and country offices, and several partners deploy a wide range of planning projects and tools in different countries to bring together diverse solutions to address the commitments within the Global Compact on Refugees, Global Compact for Migration, Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, which include exploring \"Alternatives to Camps\", supporting the paradigm shift towards the integration of refugee and host communities in combined programming, and development of sustainable and long-term solutions as part of multi-actor and comprehensive responses to \"Leave No One Behind\", ensuring the most vulnerable populations are promoted and protected. Duties and responsibilities The consultant will be working under the direct supervision of Programme Management Officer within the Planning Finance and Economy section, of the Urban Practices Branch. They will interact with certain stakeholders supporting programmes led by the Programme Management Officer, and therefore he/she will be appointed based on securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. The consultant will undertake the following tasks: 1. Finalized validation workshops for the urban regeneration final proposed and collated strategies and action plans meetings and engagements with the National and County Government, Host and Refugee communities, UN and other humanitarian actors. 2. Finalized urban regeneration strategy report for Kakuma-Kalobeyei and ensured adoption at the county level through sensitization and awareness engagement meetings. 3. Strengthened disaster response and management through reconstruction and rehabilitation of flood and drought resilient infrastructure. 4. Enhanced preparedness of local government, host and refugee communities for climate disaster impacts through early warning systems. 5. Enhanced economic and food security for host and refugee communities for promotion of human security through income generating activities for women and youth. 6. Conducts geospatial analysis of vulnerability assets/communities to derive future actions related to the project implementation and perform related work as assigned or required. 7. Support preparation and conducting of relevant workshop and engagements with the National and County Government, Host and Refugee communities, UN and other humanitarian actors on disaster preparedness and climate resilient. 8. Participated as a technical focal point within the spatial planning, shelter and infrastructure working group under KISDEP in coordination meetings with various stakeholder including the Turkana County Government, UN-Agencies and other partners. 9. Preparation of necessary spatial maps using GIS or any other relevant software. Qualifications/special skillsAcademic Qualifications; University degree (Bachelor's or equivalent) in Urban Planning, Rural development, Agricultural science, Social Studies or related field that is relevant in sustainable urban development is required. Working Experience; Minimum of 2 years experience dealing with sustainable urban development and climate change resilience is required. Relevant experience in architecture, planning and urban designing of flood mitigation measures and resilience infrastructure, public and social facilities such as public/green spaces, sustainable housing model, infrastructure and community development is required.
