Terms of Reference

BACKGROUND

The Department of Security Risk Management (DSRM) supports the UNRWA mandate by providing guidance, support, training, and facilitating risk-informed decision making through ad hoc analysis for programmes in all environments. DSRM strives to ensure that crosscutting issues including gender and protection are integrated into all the Department’s initiatives and efforts by focusing on four main pillars:

  1. Capacity Building

  2. Operational Support

  3. ARC services (Analysis, Reporting, and Communication)

  4. Security Governance

DSRM engages with the Inter Agency Security Management Network to review policies, practices, budget, and resource related issues pertaining to the United Nations Security Management System that work to improve the efficiency of security risk management.

This post reports directly to the DSRM Security Risk Management Analyst and provides assistance in conducting research, analysis and reporting on security risk management (SRM) related issues. The intern will support security risk management analytical works in order to develop and improve UNRWAs security risk management. The intern is also responsible for updating and maintaining the DSRM SIMS database and related data management tools.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Assists in the development of trend analysis; gathers comprehensive information on security factors and determines its relevance, validity and reliability of resources

· Monitors and analyzes socio-political developments in the Agency’s fields of operation and within the region; develops and tracks early warning indicators and assesses conflict vulnerability

· Assists in researching and producing situation assessments, field specific security risk analysis and evaluation of the security operations.

· Conducts research and situation reports on specific threat factors.

· Assists in the running of Security Information Management System (SIMS).

· Assists in the integration of the geographic Information System (GIS into SIMS).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited educational institution in Risk Management, Management and Technology, International Relations, or related field.

Work Experience: Applicants are not required to have professional work experience, although prior experience in data analysis will be an advantage.

Languages: Excellent command of spoken and written English

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Good working knowledge of developing presentations.
  • Prior experience in the development of analytical reports.
  • Organisational skills, including planning.
