About Flowminder
Flowminder is a non-profit foundation that specialises in the analysis of anonymised mobile phone data, satellite imagery, and household survey data for humanitarian and international development purposes.
Our mission is to enable decision makers to access the data they need to transform the lives of vulnerable people, at scale. We are striving to create a world in which decisions that can improve the lives of vulnerable people are based on the most appropriate evidence.
Flowminder researchers pioneered the use of mobile operator data for humanitarian purposes. They were the first to use data from mobile phone companies to monitor population movements following a large-scale disaster and a major infectious disease outbreak (such as the Haiti earthquake and cholera outbreak, 2010), including showing that mobility data from mobile operator data can predict the spatial spread of an infectious disease.

Responsibilities

  • You will lead Flowminder’s work on the use of mobile operator data and other mobility data to support control and elimination of infectious diseases in low and lower-middle income countries. Your work will include the production of new and the synthesis of existing knowledge and methods, as well as leading work to improve operational capacity to use these methods, within the organisation and among partners.
  • You will lead Flowminder's projects focused on infectious disease control in collaboration with key partners, including US CDC, IOM, LMIC governments and collaborating universities.
  • You will provide expertise in the burden of infectious diseases and their control in LMICs.
  • You will provide leadership on how population mobility affects transmission dynamics and how infectious diseases can affect mobility (with a focus on the former).
  • Your focus will be on the synthesis and understanding of new and emerging methods for the use of population mobility data to support infectious disease control in LMICs, rather than modelling and theoretical research. However, you will need to oversee and judge the operational relevance of ongoing research inside and outside Flowminder.
  • Lead or take part in writing of peer reviewed articles and reports
  • Experience
    You will have experience in:
  • Infectious disease control in LMICs
  • Working with national or international infectious disease control programmes
  • Data analysis and interpretation of scientific information and in analysing epidemiological data
You will preferably have experience relating to:
  • Infectious disease transmission dynamics, ideally with experience in the interaction between mobility and transmission dynamics and mathematical modelling of infectious diseases
  • Vaccination strategy and planning
  • Outbreak investigations
  • Work in or with international organisations within public health and infectious disease epidemiology
  • Competencies
  • Project management
  • Writing reports, applications, scientific reports
  • The ability to work effectively as a member of a team and liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders in a professional manner
  • The ability to analyse, summarise and interpret complex epidemiological data
  • An understanding of LMIC contexts and public health systems, including infectious disease reporting and control strategies
  • Excellent command of English both oral and written
  • Qualifications & Training
  • Advanced training in infectious disease epidemiology
  • PhD or demonstrated equivalent training in statistics, mathematics, infectious disease epidemiology or other relevant quantitative science

Other organisations may call this role Epidemiologist, Infectious Disease Consultant, Infectious Disease Advisor, Infectious Disease Researcher, or Researcher.
