The mission of the EssentialTech Centre is to harness science and technology to drive development, support humanitarian action and foster peace.

In this position, you will lead the PeaceTech activities of the centre — a division focusing on research and innovation to promote peace. You will be responsible for developing and growing the activities, in close collaboration with research labs, international organizations, NGOs, governments and the private sector. You will pioneer entrepreneurial solutions to generate a sustainable and large-scale impact.

Main duties and responsibilities include :

As the leader of our PeaceTech division your role is to

  1. Initiate, launch and supervise interdisciplinary and collaborative projects, which contribute to promoting peace locally and globally. You will be responsible creating the partnerships and raising the funds for the projects. In line with the centre’s approach, you will provide directions in the division’s projects to maximize their impact.

  2. Conduct research on the promotion of peace via technology innovation and entrepreneurship, and publish your results in leading journals.

  3. You will participate in the teaching activities of the EssentialTech centre.

  4. You will provide expertise to EPFL’s labs interested in science and technology innovation for peace.

Your profile :
Essential:

  • Master-level Engineer in communication technologies, computer science or other branches of engineering.
  • A solid experience peace promotion. Practical experience, with large NGOs and/or international organizations.
  • Confirmed leadership capabilities with a talent to motivate transversally. The candidate must be a team player.
  • Proven experience in science and technology research.
  • Proven experience in entrepreneurship or industry work.
  • Proven experience leading multi-stakeholder projects. Facilitating negotiations between stakeholders with different motivations and aims.
  • Great capacity to communicate in an inspiring fashion, both in public presentations and in writing, fluently in English and French.
  • An ability to tap into a large contact network in order to build momentum.
  • A high capacity for hard work and self-motivation in difficult challenges.
  • To be ready to travel to low-income countries/fragile contexts, on a regular basis.

    Desirable:

  • A PhD is not mandatory but preferred.

  • Experience working in/with low-income countries.
