Head of (m/w/d) the Gambia country component in the Programme to Build and Strengthen the Police Structures in Selected Partner Countries in Africa

Job description

The Africa Police Programme is active in eleven country measures in Africa. On behalf of the German Federal Foreign Office, support is provided here for national and regional police institutions. This includes advice regarding police reform processes, the organisation of training measures, provision of specific technical equipment and facilities, and renovation of police infrastructure. Field staff are deployed in the programme countries and are responsible for implementing the country measures. The programme is managed from a coordination office in Berlin.

Your tasks

  • Responsibility for the proper and independent implementation of the Gambia country component in consultation with the programme managers in Berlin
  • Managing the European Union (EU) combined financing
  • Leading a small team of national staff
  • Coordination with and provision of expert advice for the project partners
  • Support with the development of strategy papers
  • Good coordination with GIZ’s regional office in Dakar
  • Coordination with the other stakeholders in the sector (international governmental and non-governmental organisations)
  • Provision of information for and cooperation with the office of the German mission abroad in Banjul

Your profile

  • Relevant professional training as a police officer and in-depth knowledge of police work
  • Many years of professional experience in providing advice on reform processes and security sector reforms as well as policy and organisational advice
  • Experience of leading international teams
  • Good knowledge of German and international development cooperation
  • Experience of working outside Europe, preferably in Africa, in the fields of peace and security
  • Ability to work in a team and high level of personal commitment
  • Flexibility and resilience
  • Fluent business English and a good knowledge of German
