Every year, millions of people around the world go missing as a result of conflict, human rights abuses, disasters, organized crime, irregular migration, and other causes. This is a complex global challenge that can be tackled effectively through cross-cutting programs that address a variety of difficult, interconnected issues.

The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) is the only international organization tasked exclusively to work on the issue of missing persons. It works with governments and other stakeholders, including families of the missing, to help them develop and maintain successful missing persons processes. To learn more about ICMP click here.

Position Background

Reporting to the Science and Technology Director, and working closely with Heads of Programs and AAD staff in the country programs, the Head of Archaeology and Anthropology Division’s will work from ICMP headquarters in The Hague and will spend significant amount working in our country programs. The main duties and responsibilities are the following:

  • Reviews, updates and operationalizes AAD’s strategy to underpin institutional and programmatic goals, and harmonize ICMP’s AAD working modalities and engagement internally and externally
  • Works with AAD staff to develop and maintain standard operating procedures and guidelines in support of ICMP technical activity and/or capacity building in program areas
  • Drafts policy, work plans, evaluation criteria and standards of conduct for ICMP work related to AAD
  • Works with the Center for Excellence and Learning, to develop AAD learning plans and curriculum
  • Facilitates training, workshops, seminars and on-the-job mentoring to external partners and ICMP staff members
  • Leads the AAD general orientation training for all new hires and ensures a thorough onboarding of all AAD staff in the country programs related to ICMP AAD standards of operation
  • Keeps abreast of all AAD activities and ensures suitable AAD staff or consultants are available to implement AAD activities and trainings
  • Ensures AAD activities in country programs are conducted appropriately as directed by country Head of Office, to ensure congruence with program goals and to work within the framework of established cooperation with domestic authorities and other partners
  • Performing AAD activities in country programs such as working in hardship locations during mass grave excavations
  • Provides inputs into project proposal and donor reports
  • Participates in authorship of scientific publications
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Advanced university or equivalent degree in Forensic Archaeology and/or Anthropology
  • At least ten years of internationally recognized high level of subject matter expertise experience in forensic anthropology and archaeology, at the level of scientific principle and practical application
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated capacity at personnel and operations management
  • Exceptional degree of professionalism and interpersonal maturity
  • Proven record of academic achievement and publication.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Professional fluency in written and spoken English; proficiency fluency in Spanish or Arabic is an asset
  • Proven ability to perform well in the face of unexpected developments or continuously evolving political or operational circumstances
  • Ability to provide constant and effective leadership, while considering divergent opinions or acting upon decisions taken by others
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Proven ability to interact positively with colleagues regardless of culture, nationality or gender
  • Ability to travel at short notice and to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings
  • Commitment to the underlying objective of helping the authorities and families of the missing to account for missing persons in an impartial and transparent manner
  • Physical and mental resilience, with the ability to operate effectively in hostile environment.

Benefits
