DanChurchAid (DCA) invites applications from an experienced Protection Advisor to be based in DCA’s HQ in Copenhagen and working in a roving position with up to 50% travel time. The position can be based remotely and be working from abroad.

You will be part of the Humanitarian Response and Mine Action (HRMA) unit that is at the centre to implement the organisation’s humanitarian goals with a focus on protection and gender equality. Every day you will work with a wide range of skilled colleagues from all over DCA in Denmark, our 19 country offices and from our global ACT Alliance, and always try to maximize and utilize the combined knowledge and skills set in the humanitarian-development-peace nexus. The main responsibility of the Global Protection Advisor is to engage with DCA’s country offices and partners in supporting protection programmes, including protection and gender mainstreaming and gender-based violence and psycho-social support.

The Global Protection Advisor is responsible for developing, rolling out, and monitoring DCA’s protection strategy including capacity strengthening/training of DCA staff and partners. This may include operating under challenging and remote conditions such as conflict affected settings. The position at times also includes supervisory duties such as management support or gap-filling in DCA’s Country Offices.

You will work closely with DCA’s technical advisers working on gender equality, cash and markets, mine action, and conflict prevention & peacebuilding, humanitarian policy and human rights. The Global Protection Advisor reports to the Humanitarian Coordinator.

The main duties relating to this position are as follows:

Surge capacity and remote support to DCA country offices in:

  • Programming and planning of humanitarian response projects with specialised protection and/or integrated protection
  • Support needs assessments, programme design and fundraising applications
  • Training of DCA staff and partners on protection and gender equality
  • Support to protection strategy development and revision in relevant contexts
  • Develop, harmonise, and disseminate relevant protection tools and guidelines
  • Support management of humanitarian operations when necessary
  • Start-up and closure of projects and offices

Policy, strategy and programming:

  • Be DCA’s focal point for protection and protection mainstreaming related issues (e.g. HQ policy, country-level support, and assist cross-cutting fundraising efforts)
  • Take lead on developing DCA’s strategic direction on protection and protection mainstreaming
  • Take lead on regular protection analysis, identifying protection issues and gaps.
  • Take lead on identifying protection opportunities in DCA’s programmes.

Learning and capacity strengthening:

  • Lead on the development of policies, SOPs, tools and methodologies to better integrate protection across DCA’s programmes.
  • Contribute to the institutionalisation and promotion of best practices and learning related to protection.
  • Help design and deliver capacity strengthening activities for DCA’s staff and partners to understand and deliver safe programming

Networking and representation:

  • HRMA lead person for ensuring that protection principles are mainstreamed throughout all DCA’s programmes
  • Participate in and represent DCA in global protection forums and working groups
  • Participation in internal and external technical working groups on protection

What we are ideally looking for from you:

  • A minimum of 5 years of NGO work, senior level experience within the thematic discipline of Protection in humanitarian assistance, ideally experience from working in complex settings
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to adapt quickly, strong communication and diplomatic skills, with the ability to build relations both within and outside DCA
  • A clear understanding of protection issues, legal frameworks and professional standards in humanitarian contexts including on gender equality, GBV, forced displacement and HRBA
  • Good understanding of donor requirements on protection, including specialised protection, protection mainstreaming and protection integration
  • Proven skills in facilitating capacity strengthening of international and national actors
  • Experience in supporting programme and strategy development with country offices and partners.
  • Ability to lead and motivate colleagues from various technical backgrounds and a strong drive and commitment to getting the job done well. Management experience is a strong advantage
  • A relevant tertiary academic education at Master level
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of Arabic or French would be advantageous
  • Ability to travel up to 150 days per year, including month long trips
  • Understanding of the humanitarian principles linked to NGO operations. Understanding of the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Triple Nexus and how it relates to programming
  • Experience working in remote and insecure field locations
  • Strong leadership, team building and communication skills
