We are looking for an intern to support our work on Environmental Peacemaking Intern for 6 months to support the Institute’s ongoing scoping and mapping on climate change, environmental degradation and conflict, development of engagement design in selected priority regions while organising debates and discussions relevant to the Institute’s mission in this area.
Working from the Institute’s office in Brussels, the intern will work as part of the Peace Practice and Innovation Unit reporting to the Environmental Peacemaking Officer.
Environmental Peacemaking is about ensuring that conflict resolution is geared to meet climate change and wider environmental challenges in conflict contexts, with the intertwined objectives to contribute to a sustainable environment and enhance the prospects for durable peace. By building relationships on the ground, raising awareness and engaging parties to conflict, the Institute will contribute to innovate the political machinery of conflict prevention and resolution to bridge climate and environmental challenges.
The Institute is in the process of upgrading its engagement in environmental peacemaking in conflict-affected areas and raise awareness about these issues among conflict parties as well as European policy makers and in EU member states.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the European political machinery of conflict resolution and the Institute’s work on environmental peacemaking while acquiring skills in project development and management, organisation of events and fundraising.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
· Conduct desk research and analysis on selected climate and environmental issues as they relate to conflict in priority regions to inform the development of engagement design;
· Conduct a stakeholder mapping of EU and European nations policy makers, creating an easy overview of key policy instruments and actors;
· Contributing to the design and organising of 2-3 events (online and in-person) with EU and European policy makers in Brussels and/or online;
· Keeping abreast of upcoming debates and discussions, reports, call for proposals, political events relevant to the Institute’s environmental peacemaking work;
· Support the Environmental Peacemaking Officer in the administration of the programme, including donor and partner communication;
· Support the Environmental Peacemaking Officer in the development of the programme, including drafting proposal documents and budgets.
· University degree in political or social science, peace and conflict studies, international relations and/or geography, environmental studies or similar;
· Strong interest in climate and environmental issues in conflict contexts;
· Prior relevant traineeship or internship is considered an advantage;
· Excellent command of English required. French, Spanish or Arabic an asset. Other EU languages an asset;
· Ability to work well under deadlines;
· Meticulous attention to detail;
· Good organisational, prioritisation, communication and teamwork skills. Can work independently and demonstrates initiative;
· Ability to work in Belgium (Belgian or EU citizen / currently in possession of a Belgian work permit).
· 6 months internship contract with a possibility of extension at €1,000 per month
