Action on Armed Violence Researcher London, UK Salary: £22,000 – £25,000 (depending on experience)

Job summary Working with the Executive Director, this job as a researcher would be in helping undertake some of AOAV’s research on weapons, militarisation, arms trade and the impact of conflict on civilians worldwide.

This fascinating role would see the researcher working on a wide range of research publications, ranging from responsive articles to unfolding news reports, investigating the impact of explosive weapons in populated areas on civilian harm, to working on AOAV’s flagship annual report on the global impact of explosive weapons.

Job responsibilities

Research

  • Produce reports, advocacy materials and news stories based on AOAV’s data.
  • Research and write substantive publications, including studies on the humanitarian impact of explosive weapons, weapon technology, militarisation and the arms trade.
  • Work on AOAV’s Explosive Violence Monitoring Project (EVMP), including collection of data.
  • Quantitative data analysis of AOAV’s monitoring dataset for periodic publications (monthly updates, annual reports), and responding to external data requests from partners or media
  • Carry out field-research, sometimes in hostile environments.
  • Carry out surveys and semi-structured interviews, ranging from refugees displaced by armed violence to senior military and political officers.

Policy, Advocacy and Communications

  • Occasionally represent AOAV at international conferences
  • Network and outreach to a range of external contacts (e.g. NGO, media, academic, private sector).
  • Work with AOAV’s policy networks (e.g. International Network on Explosive Weapons), and helping to represent AOAV in Steering Committee meetings and calls.
  • Write web content commenting on breaking news stories and policy developments.
  • Social media dissemination and comment, particularly Twitter and building AOAV’s social and press media presence.
  • Assist with web management (using Word Press).

Misc

  • Support Executive Director in developing fundraising proposals and applications.
  • Take minutes at board meetings.
  • Help managing and coordinating volunteers.

Job Skills and Qualifications

  • A Masters degree in conflict studies, security, humanitarianism, international development, or related field would be preferred, but not necessary.
  • Proven quantitative and qualitative research skills, including ability to work with technical data and quantitative analysis.
  • Great writing skills are essential, and you need to be able to write for a range of audiences and producing both accessible news stories and complex research projects.
  • High attention to detail, excellent note-taking skills.
  • Must be willing to travel to places affected by armed violence; to interview victims and to present findings in high-level meetings. Previous experience of working in and researching conflict zones is desirable.
  • Proficient at using Microsoft Excel and other quantitative and qualitative data analysis software.
  • Adept at social media advocacy.
  • Willing to make semi-regular presentations of data and research.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Individual must be self-motivated and able to work independently – this is a crucial element as we are a small team and often requires working alone. This role would suit someone who finds research rewarding.
