Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located within the Sri Lanka accountability project (¨the Project¨), based in Geneva. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Legal Officer of the Project and the overall supervision of the Chief of Investigations Support Section of the Human Rights Inquiries Branch within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Associate Interpreter/Translator will be responsible for the following duties: • Provides accurate translation/ interpretation from/to Tamil as required, including in interviews and meetings conducted as part of the project. • May check verbatim records of meetings services to ensure that there is no significant difference between the interpreted and original language versions of speeches and statements that have been recorded. • Assists in the production of accurate and verbatim translation of written and oral statements, media articles and other documents from English to Tamil and vice versa as required. • Supports as necessary the outreach programme of the project. • Participates in field missions. • Performs other related duties as required. EducationAdvanced university degree in translation, interpretation, languages, or a related field. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A Certificate for United Nations Competitive Examination for Interpretation is desirable. Job - Specific QualificationNot available. Work ExperienceA minimum of 2 years of work experience in translation and/or interpretation, including as part of academic research work, is required. Out of the 2 years, one year of work experience in the above areas within the United Nations Common Systems is desirable. Experience in providing translation or interpretation to field investigations or on human rights-related subjects is desirable. Experience working on human rights issues related to the Asia Pacific region is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
