Setting and ReportingUnder the direct supervision of the Head of Capacity Building and overall guidance of the Head of Office, the incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of all activities related to the work of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territory (OHCHR oPt) related to human rights promotion and protection pursuant to relevant United Nations resolutions. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Researches and collects information pertaining to violations of international human rights and humanitarian law by all duty bearers, including their gender dimensions from a variety of data sources (e.g., communications, publications, the press) to keep abreast of issues/events and provide up-to-date information. • Drafts inputs to reports and correspondence relating to human rights matters. • Assists with human rights training programmes for national law enforcement officials, representatives of the civil society and human rights non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in order to promote national capacity building. • Assists in the reviews of human rights issues, including their gender dimensions, and participates in discussions with other Human Rights Officers (HROs) on the integration of these issues into political, economic and development-related programmes. • Participates with other HROs in discussions with relevant authorities and other influential actors with the aim of stopping or preventing human rights violations or seeks other remedial action by the authorities to prevent similar violations occurring in the future. • Assists his/her supervisor in liaising with government, NHRI, NGOs, Civil Society organizations, UN agencies and other partners to exchange information, monitor and follow- up on developments affecting the human rights situation, and for the referral of cases, with special attention to vulnerable groups. • Performs other related duties as required. EducationAdvanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is required. Work ExperienceApplicants to positions at this level who have an advanced university degree in a relevant field of study are not required to have professional work experience. For applicants who have a first level university degree, two additional years of qualifying work experience is required. Experience conducting trainings on human rights law is desirable. Experience in international human rights law and humanitarian law is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
