Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Division of Human Health is organized into four Sections whose objectives are to enhance the capabilities of Member States to address needs related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health problems through the development and application of nuclear techniques within a framework of quality assurance.

Main Purpose

The Technical Reviewer provides professional support and assistance for the review and submission of scientific/technical manuscripts and advocacy materials. The Technical Reviewer coordinates the preparation and submission of scientific articles to peer review journals in accordance to the IAEA and International standards.

Role

The Technical Reviewer is: (1) an adviser to originators (both staff and external authors) of scientific/technical publications and advocacy/promotional items, providing support during the preparation of manuscripts and other materials to be published; (2) a publications assistant ensuring that relevant publishing policies, rules and guidelines are applied in a consistent manner; (3) a divisional focal point ensuring that publications are developed, reviewed, approved and issued in the most efficient and timely manner; (4) a coordinator for Divisional input to regular Agency publications (NTR, AL, etc); (5) a communications focal point for NAHU.

  • Review scientific and technical manuscripts, in close liaison with subject matter experts, to clarify technical issues.
  • Review/organize material developed by technical experts regarding order, clarity, style and terminology.
  • Prepare illustrations, indexing, cataloguing material, references and undertake editorial quality control of documents for publications.
  • Draft information materials (e.g. brochures, flyers) and coordinate events (e.g. Divisional Seminars, Insight Series, etc.).
  • Edit electronic educational materials developed by the Division.
  • Identify developments in specific fields to determine the need for revision in previously published materials and development of new materials.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

  • Bachelor's Degree

    Publishing or Sciences An advanced degree is an asset.

  • Two years of relevant experience in the publishing environment required with experience in technical reviewing and/or scientific editing.
  • Experience in coordinating the delivery of quality publications.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $48805 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 24256*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
