Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian aid organization that provides assistance in more than 60 countries to populations in distress, to victims of natural or manmade disasters and to victims of armed conflicts, without discrimination and irrespective of origin, religion, creed or political affiliation.

CONTEXT

MSF's mission in Belgium aims to address, through a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, the health needs and key social determinants of the most vulnerable segments of the population, including migrants in transit and undocumented migrants, while proactively engaging in assessing main difficulties and promoting institutional change.

The technical psychologist will be integrated into the Brussels migration project, which includes:

· Active participation in the Humanitarian Hub, where several organisations provide a wide range of services to vulnerable populations. In this structure, mental health care (first line) is provided by Médecins Sans Frontières. A second line service has also been created to provide psychological follow-up and respond to identified needs.

· Outreach activity initially designed to support the response to COVID-19 in Belgium among the most vulnerable populations. The mobile team, also composed of various organisations, intervenes in non-accredited structures (such as squats) and accredited structures in terms of awareness-raising, prevention and control of infections, health promotion and referral to psycho-social-medical care if necessary.

MISSION

Organize and carryout all psychological activities related to the training and support of cultural mediators and at the Hub, shelter and MSF office, according to MSF mental health and psychosocial protocols, and in coordination with the mental health activity managers of the project, in order to ensure a smooth and qualitative functioning of the activities offered to patients.

  1. In close coordination with the mental health activity manager, planning and supervising the associated processes (training, evaluation, development and communication) of the mental health staff of the project in order to improve staff capabilities and ensure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required.

  2. Reporting to the line manager on any relevant information linked to MH activities and participating in monthly reports

RESPONSIBILITIES

General

· Working with the whole multidisciplinary team to improve standards of MHPSS care.

· Participating in the regular meetings with the MHAM and the MHPSS team

· Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the complete set of MHPSS activities.

· Meeting regularly with MHAM to discuss standards of MHPSS care, training and team development.

· Reviewing and developing the technical materials, tools, guidelines and documents, and coordinating and ensuring the implementation of all Mental Health standard protocols and procedures set by MSF in order to provide the most appropriate treatment for patients.

· Developing psychosocial and psychoedcuation activities conducted by Mental Health/SW team, including surveillance and recreational activities, psychoeducation, PFA and mental health awareness.

· Providing continuous technical and theoretical support for the team and other involved staff members to increase MH awarness, knowledge about MH disorders, communication skills, self-care, working with VoT and SGBV and other relevant topics.

Trainings

· Training psychologists and cultural mediators in the appropiate management of beneficiairies: counseling, be observant and organized ; be open to others and able to communicate with all types of patients;

· Continous capacity building of MH team with trainings and clinical supervision/case discussions, building up counselling skills

· Working in collaboration with the cultural mediator supervisor to improve MHPSS activities in the hub, shelter and maraude, and supporting the cultural mediator in the correct application of good pratice.

· In close collaboration with the Activity Managers, supervising the associated training, induction, evaluation, potential detection, development and communication coaching the supervisors in these processes.

Support

· Supporting the team in identifying direct and indirect target groups

· Supporting the team in identifying specific needs: e.g. loss of a loved one, experience of violence

· Supporting the team in the development and methodology of activities related to specific needs: e.g. memorial ceremony, peer support...

· Supporting the team in the implementation of activities to strengthen coping mechanisms at the individual, family and community levels.

REQUIREMENTS

Education

· Essential : Diploma in Psychology

Experience

· Essential: working experience of at least 5 years in a humanitarian setting. Desirable: working experience in MSF or other NGOs and in developing countries

· Experience in psycho-social support, psycho-education and group activities (essential)

· Experience in capacity building

· Essential experience in working with migrants and/or experience in Trauma-therapy and/ or work with Victims of torture and sexual violence
