Organizational Setting

The objective of the Department of Nuclear Energy (NE) is to foster the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in: improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear wastes; catalysing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies; developing indigenous capabilities around the world for national energy planning; deploying new nuclear power plants; preserving and disseminating nuclear information and knowledge; and advancing science and industry through improved operation of research reactors.

The department has a dynamic, participative and interactive operating environment with inputs received from the Board of Governors, the General Conference, policy and decision-makers, and technical counterparts in Member States and the international development community.

The Division of Nuclear Power comprises the Nuclear Power Engineering Section, the Nuclear Power Technology Development Section, the Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section and the INPRO (International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles) Section. The Division provides core engineering, technological, human resource development and management support to interested Member States in the field of nuclear power.

The Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section helps Member States to have a better understanding of the requirements needed for implementing nuclear power programmes, to enhance their capabilities associated with the construction of their first nuclear power plant or new nuclear power plants, to enhance their abilities to develop the necessary infrastructure for introducing nuclear power on safe and sustainable manner, and to expand the use of an internationally recognized approach for the introduction of nuclear power, including a harmonized framework and qualitative data, through coordination throughout the IAEA.

 

Main Purpose

 

As a key team member reporting to the Head of the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Group, the Technical Lead (Nuclear Power Infrastructure Development) manages projects, develops international guidelines, develops and implements new programmes on training, and assists Member States in the area of nuclear infrastructure development.

 

 

Role

 

The Technical Lead (Nuclear Power Infrastructure Development) is: (1) a programme planner and implementer who plans, coordinates and reports on the activities in the area of the IAEA's nuclear infrastructure building; (2) a scientific secretary who plans and leads meetings related to the production of IAEA documents in the area of nuclear infrastructure and nuclear power plant project management, and promotes, coordinates and participates in services to requesting Member States on national infrastructure development for appropriate technical cooperation (TC) projects; (3) a mission leader who plans and leads complex infrastructure review missions; and (4) a leader, leading the development of technical materials, ensuring the technical quality of work produced by the group and providing feedback regarding consistency of IAEA documentation in the area of nuclear power infrastructure development.

 

 

Functions / Key Results Expected

 

Plan, formulate, and implement the IAEA's activities relating to nuclear infrastructure development, including extrabudgetary contributions from donors.

Plan, prepare and review technical materials, including documents, guidance, course materials and others for technical quality and consistency. Develop and prepare documents and technical reports in the area of nuclear infrastructure.

Plan and lead complex infrastructure missions to Member States, including preparatory and follow-up activities, and the assessment of their needs; provide technical input and coordinate the preparation of mission reports.

Serve as a Technical Officer for the implementation of TC projects or other services requested by Member States.

Initiate, organize and conduct technical meetings, consultants meetings, symposia and other IAEA meetings in the area of IAEA nuclear infrastructure building.

Organize and lecture at interregional, regional and national courses on nuclear infrastructure.

Liaise with experts throughout the IAEA regarding nuclear power infrastructure development to ensure consistency of guidance materials.

Develop and prepare documents and technical reports in the area of nuclear infrastructure.

Build and maintain strategic partnerships and alliances with a wide range of stakeholders in Member States to promote the implementation of international best practices in the area of nuclear infrastructure.

Prepare documents and give lectures on the IAEA's infrastructure development activities in international conferences, symposia and at other public events.
