Teaching Optometrist - fixed term

Madang, Papua New Guinea

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ aims to eliminate avoidable blindness and vision impairment in the Pacific by making eye care accessible for all. As a part of this, we have developed a year-long Advanced Diploma in Eye Care for ophthalmic clinicians at Divine Word University in Madang, Papua New Guinea. The eye care programme began in 2007 and we have had many students graduate successfully over the years.

We are now looking for a suitably qualified, committed, and passionate optometrist to join our education team to teach our well-established Advanced Diploma in Eye Care at Divine Word University. You’ll be at the centre of our education programme, teaching and mentoring students and mentoring fellow lecturers so you’ll need to be a natural leader with superb communication, teaching and training skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver lectures

  • Teach practical skills

  • Supervise students in their clinical rotations

  • General administration relating to the course and the University

  • Mentoring of local counterparts

Key Skills & Attributes:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Optometry

  • Minimum of five years’ work experience (as a qualified optometrist)

  • Fluent written and spoken English

  • Background in teaching/mentoring

  • A commitment to social justice

  • Past experience working in low resource settings
