CIMMYT is seeking an experienced professional to support the Feed the Future’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Activity team in Bangladesh. The individual selected will be expected and asked to contribute to a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional team working to increase the availability and affordability of IPM measures, to increase the capacity of different agricultural stakeholders to implement IPM measures and to Increase the adoption of IPM measures by smallholder farmers to increase agricultural production and productivity. The Senior Research Associate and IPM Specialist will facilitate the development of training materials, including modules, manuals, videos, and through other media and ICTs, organize trainings and experiential learning activities with public and private sector partners, with gender sensitive programming, and track progress of trainings and outcomes through maintenance of training databases. The Senior Research Associate and IPM Specialist will also contribute strongly to the IPM packages development and their field validation studies of different crops by the partner public and private institutes and assist in monitoring and supervision of biological control studies especially mass rearing and field efficacy study of different bio-control agents (predators & parasitoids).

The position will be based in Dhaka, Bangladesh and will require extensive travel between project sites, primarily Jashore, Chudanga, Patuakhali, Barisal and Dinajpur. Travel may account for over half the time requirements of this position. The Training Specialist will report directly to IPMA-CIMMYT leadership team, including the IPMA Project Leader.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Take a leading role in coordination and the development and implementation of Integrated Pest management research work, field validation studies of IPM packages of different crops with a focus on monitoring of data collections, field data analysis etc. Make regular reports and tables that allow the program scientists to track the project. Take a leading role in collaboration with CIMMYT and other scientists in National Research and Extension institutes, as well as private sector partners, to collect technical information and best practices on Integarted Pest Management and translate these messages into easy-to-understand educational formats including modules, manuals, and other media. Design and carry out special investigations as assigned by the manager/project lead. Assist in supporting NARES research and the coordination of the mass rearing of biological control agents research and development work and their field efficacy test along with the bio-rational pest management with parasitoid augmentative release. Also assist in developing a delivery mechanism of the biological agents in order to ensure benefit in managing the harmful insect pests, especially fall armyworm in maize. Work to increase the gender and social inclusion of IPM training programs developed by CIMMYT, by integrating strong gender appropriate messaging into training programs following the IPMA guidelines With partners, lead efforts to develop appropriate training and extension materials on agricultural practices and business models for farmers and rural entrepreneurs Facilitate workshops and hands-on training on integrated pest management including for Fall Armyworm In cooperation with the Department of Agricultural Extension, increase the use of ICTs and visual media to deliver appropriate training and extension at scale. Carry out activities as assigned by the supervisors to achieve the objectives of IPMA. Assist and/or lead in writing papers for international scientific journal standards. Under supervision of project supervisor, perform statistical analysis of the information collected on pest management in each of the stages of the cropping and farming systems cycles, through the development of a database, in order to present reports on the results achieved by the project. Participate in the publication of research results through annual reports, presentations and publications. Coordinate efforts to raise awareness about project activities, products, and outcomes among stakeholders, partners, policymakers, and the general public. Assisting in monitoring and evaluation and reporting efforts by providing quality input and reports in a timely manner (as indicated by project lead).

Required experience, background and skills:

Masters’ Degree or above in agricultural sciences, pest management (entomology or plant pathology), or related fields. Other degrees will be considered in case of exceptional candidates. Advanced knowledge and evidence of achievements in IPM research and development work. Demonstrated experience in leading training programs for the public and private sector in integrated pest management. 5especially on pst managementgyeand their field efficacy test ass rearing and field efficacy study of different bio-control agenPreferably, five years or more professional work experience in agricultural (especially on integrated pest management) research projects. Five or more years in a similar role leading training efforts in agricultural and rural development programs. Fewer years of experience will be considered in circumstances of exceptional candidates. Demonstrated ability to collect and manage data related to training and uptake of training messages by farmers in rural development. Understanding and experience of assuring gender-equitable outcomes in education and training for agricultural development. Outgoing, innovative work outlook and ability to work effectively with minimum supervision Knowledge of, and ideally demonstrated achievements in the use of ICTs to deliver training ifnrormation to farmers at scale. Experience with video scripting and production is desireable. Advanced managerial competence, strong communication and soft skills, and ability to lead and inspire teams. Excellent spoken, written, and listening skills in English and Bangla. Fluency to persuade, negotiate, coach, conceptualize and train. Must be able to show training materials, outputs and achievements (e.g. example modules, training manuals, examples of training courses conducted, etc.). The position is for Bangladesh Nationals for an initial fixed-term contract of 1-year subject to completion of probationary period as per policy, after which further employment is subject to performance and the continued availability of funds.
